January 11 – Last month Oberlin College seniors Chris Schubert and Chase Palmer participated in the All-American Bowl All-Star Game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

Both players had outstanding performances in the game as their Stars team, consisting of top college seniors, topped the Stripes squad 53-17 on Dec. 15. The Stripes’ team was made up of Mid-America regional minor league players.

“This was such a tremendous honor for both of these players to be chosen to play in this game,” head coach Jeff Ramsey said. “ Chris and Chase are not only tremendous players on the field but also great young men off of the field as well.”

Schubert, a 5-foot-10 wide receiver and return specialist led all pass catchers with 120 yards on just three catches – including an 80-yard TD reception on the game’s second play. Schubert, who also added a 36-yard kickoff return to finish with 159 all-purpose yards, had a huge crack-back block that led to the Stripes’ third touchdown of the game.

Palmer showed everyone why he was one of the most feared defenders in the North Coast Athletic Conference last season as he racked up nine tackles in the game – including three sacks. Palmer, who played both linebacker and strong safety during the contest, also added two QB hurries and two pass deflections.

Schubert and Palmer were both a large part of the Yeomen’s success this past season as Oberlin finished 5-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

Schubert led OC in catches (60), receiving yards (723), TD catches (6) and all-purpose yards (2,041). He also had an 84-yard kickoff return for a TD in Oberlin’s 63-33 win over Kenyon (Nov. 3) and a 43-yard punt return for a score in the Yeomen’s 49-14 victory over Hiram (Sept. 29) in 2007.

Palmer was the defensive leader for the Yeomen last season as he tallied a team-high 103 tackles – including 11 for a loss. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder, also recorded two interceptions, 13 pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
