September 8, 2007 -- Despite a number of stellar individual performances, the Oberlin football team was edged at Heidelberg today, 26-37, to fall to 0-2 on the young season. The Yeomen came into today's non-conference contest at Tiffin looking to rebound from a tough home loss to Case Western Reserve last Saturday, but the Student Princes utilized 431 yards of total offense, including 221 rushing yards, to defeat Oberlin in its season opener.
The first half belonged to the Student Princes, as they out-gained Oberlin 239 to 65, including 147 yards on the ground. Heidelberg scored 14 straight points in the first quarter, capped by a 12-yard pass from Steve West to Aaron Jonhenry with 6:37 left in the period. Oberlin answered just a minute later with a 10-yard touchdown pass from junior Greg Mangan to senior co-captain Chris Schubert. The score was set up by a 74-yard kickoff return by Schubert. The Student Princes then closed out the first half with a field goal and touchdown to enter the intermission with a 24-7 lead.
The Yeomen's defense played a strong third quarter, but Oberlin's offense was unable to score after twice reaching Heidelberg's 30-yard line. Towards the end of the third, Heidelberg ran in for another score, but Oberlin responded thanks to yet another outstanding kickoff return by Schubert. Just seconds later, Mangan and Schubert connected for a beautiful 46-yard touchdown to make the score 30-13, Heidelberg, with one minute left in the quarter.
Oberlin carried over its positive momentum from the third quarter into the fourth, putting together an impressive drive down to Hedelberg's 15-yard line. On third and eight, though, Mangan threw his third interception of the day, putting the game nearly out of reach for the Yeomen with under 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The Student Princes then put seven more points on the board courtesy of a deep touchdown pass to Dawond Roddy with 8:27 left in the game. A 77-yard pass from Mangan to senior Andy Stein and then a nine-yard touchdown to Schubert gave the senior his third touchdown of the game, making the score 20-37. The final points of the game came on a 14-yard strike from Mangan to senior James Brady with seven seconds left on the clock.
For the game, Schubert was the star of the day for the Yeomen, as he accumulated an impressive 344 yards of total offense. The Oberlin native caught 10 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns and returned seven kickoffs for 202 yards. Mangan finished the day 28 of 51 for 367 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. His passing yardage broke the previous Oberlin single game record of 366, which he set last season at home against Heidelberg.
Also having a breakout day on offense for the Yeomen was senior Andy Stein. The quarterback turned wide receiver caught five passes for 132 yards. Defensively, junior Kris DeVant continued his strong 2007 season by leading all players with 12.5 tackles (three for loss) and a sack.
Heidelberg was led by quarterback Steve West, who completed 15 of his 18 pass attempts for 202 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Dawond Roddy also hauled in four passes for 96 yards and a score.
