Schubert Leads Yeomen Past Hiram College, 49-14
Senior wide receiver racks up three touchdowns, including 165 receiving yards

Chris Schubert (Sr.)

September 29, 2007 -- The Oberlin football team made the most out of an outstanding Homecoming crowd today at Savage Stadium, defeating Hiram College, 49-14. The Yeomen compiled 259 yards in the air and 233 on the ground to soundly defeat their North Coast Athletic Conference rival. Oberlin improved to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Terriers remained winless at 0-4 (0-1 NCAC).

Senior wide receiver and return specialist Chris Schubert, a product of Oberlin High School, paced the Yeomen's offense today by racking up three touchdowns. He amassed 165 receiving yards on seven catches, including two scores, and also ran back a punt for a touchdown. Classmate Cassius Harris got the Yeomen on the board first, though, as he connected with junior quarterback Greg Mangan for a 42-yard touchdown with 9:57 left in the opening period.

Junior running back R.V. Carroll scored from six yards out later in the first quarter, and then sophomore Wayne Mundekis added another touchdown with 59 seconds left in the period to give Oberlin an early 21-0 lead. In the second quarter, Schubert took over, racking up touchdown receptions of 23 yards and 39 yards to give the Yeomen a 35-0 lead at halftime. Mangan tallied 255 passing yards just in the first half.

In the third quarter, Oberlin took it to the ground and gradually wore out the Hiram defense. The visitors struck first in the third frame, though, off a 44-yard pass from Trevor Henderson to Steven Hammond with 10:12 remaining. Carroll responded with a 17-yard run with four minutes left in the third to make the score 42-7.

With 11:17 left in the final period, Schubert put together an amazing punt return in which he shifted his way across the field for 43 yards and a touchdown, making the score 49-7. Hiram added one last touchdown off a two-yard run by Eddie Cloud with 6:11 left.

Defensively, Oberlin was paced by senior safety Chase Palmer, who compiled six tackles, a fumble recovery, and five pass breakups. Senior Chris Pisani had 3.5 tackles for loss and junior Kris DeVant also had six tackles. In his first collegiate game at linebacker, first-year Derrick Dennis had four tackles (one for loss), while Nick Barlett, Austin Richards, and Geoff Sirockman each had 5.5 tackles.

Hiram was led in the loss by Hammond, who accumulated 76 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.

Oberlin will look to keep its winning ways alive when it travels to Denison next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. NCAC showdown in Granville, Ohio.
