Oberlin Football Team Crushes Earlham College, 42-14

October 13, 2007 -- After battling to a 7-7 tie at the intermission, the Oberlin College football team rebounded with 35 second-half points to rout visiting Earlham College, 42-14. With the North Coast Athletic Conference victory, the Yeomen improved to 3-0 in league play and 3-3 overall, setting up a battle of the only two NCAC undefeated's next Saturday when Oberlin travels to Wabash College (6-0, 4-0 NCAC). Earlham slipped to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC with today's loss.

Junior running back R.V. Carroll and senior strong safety Chase Palmer were the stars for the Yeomen this afternoon. Carroll rushed for 217 yards (third-best single-game total in school history) and four touchdowns on 34 carries, averaging 6.4 yards per attempt. Palmer, who has been selected as the NCAC's Defensive Player of the Week the last two weeks, made a strong bid for the hat trick as he had a monster game with 12 tackles (six solos), 2.5 tackles for a total loss of 23 yards, two sacks, a forced fumble, a pass breakup, and two quarterback hurries.

It was sophomore fullback Scott Kjellberg who got the Oberlin offense on the first, though, as he scored on a one-yard dive with 7:31 left in the second quarter. Earlham countered with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Randy Kerns to Terrel Brown four minutes later to the knot the score at 7-7 at the half.

Perry High School graduate R.V. Carroll took over in the third quarter, scoring touchdowns from 14 yards and one yard out, while Bryant Foreman caught a 17-yard pass from Brown to make the score 21-14 in favor of the Yeomen at the end of the third.

The Oberlin ground game was incredible in the fourth quarter, as Carroll had touchdown runs of eight yards and 29 yards. Also, first-year Ryan Harvey, another graduate of Perry High School, scored from 12 yards out with 27 seconds left in the game to make the final score 42-14.

Sophomore Wayne Mundekis finished just two yards short of 100 on just 14 carries today, while Harvey rushed for 34 yards on four carries. A number of Yeomen stood out on defense besides Palmer, led by first-year Austin Richards, who had seven tackles (two for loss) and a sack. Nick Bartlett, Kris DeVant, and Geoff Sirockman each had six tackles. Michael Evans had four tackles and a pair of key pass breakups, while senior Chris Pisani racked up four tackles, two quarterback hurries, and a crucial tackle for loss to stop a fourth-down attempt by the Quakers.

Earlham was led in the loss by quarterback Randy Kerns, who went 27 of 30 for 287 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The Quakers were held to just nine yards on the ground, compared to 376 for the Yeomen.

Next week, the Yeomen will travel to Crawfordsville, Ind., for the epic battle against the Little Giants of Wabash. The NCAC showdown is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
