September 1, 2007 -- The Oberlin College football team fell in its season opener to Case Western Reserve University this afternoon, 15-37. A nearly packed Savage Stadium and 1,275 fans came out for the rivalry contest, but a 6-20 halftime deficit was too much for the Yeomen to overcome.
Oberlin struck first today thanks to a 60-yard interception return by Michael Evans with 7:23 left in the first quarter. Case responded by racking up four unanswered touchdowns until R.V. Carroll's brilliant 10-yard run put the Yeomen to within 14 at 13-27 with 10:13 left in the third quarter. A field goal by Case's Sam Coffey and touchdown by Brendan Jones put the game out of reach at 37-13 in favor of the Spartans with just 3:25 left in the contest. After an errant punt snap with nine seconds left, junior Kris DeVant tackled Case's punter in the end zone to give Oberlin its final two points of the game, making the final score 15-37.
The Yeomen were led on offense by senior wide receiver Chris Schubert, who put together a fine game by catching nine passes for 80 yards. Senior James Brady also caught three passes for 44 yards. The Spartans were led on offense by quarterback Dan Whalen and wide receiver Tim Cowdrick. Whalen finished the game 17-28 with 204 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Cowdrick caught eight passes for 122 yards. Oberlin quarterback Greg Mangan went 18-32 for 159 yards and three interceptions.
Defensively, Oberlin was paced by seniors Chase Palmer and Chris Pisani, DeVant, and Evans. Palmer led all players with nine tackles and three pass breakups, while Pisani collected seven tackles. DeVant had a monster game in which he had 8.5 tackles (3.5 for loss) and a sack. Geoff Sirockman also had a sack for Oberlin. Case was led by Luiz Goncalves, who had 4.5 tackles and an interception.
The team total yardage totals were in favor of Case as the visitors out-gained Oberlin 403 to 181. The Yeomen converted only 2 of 13 third down opportunities, while the Spartans were 9 of 19.
Oberlin will aim to get on the winning track next Saturday when it visits Heidelberg College at 1:30 p.m.
