Oberlin Football Team Rolls Past Kenyon, 63-33
Yeomen's 63 points fifth best in school history

November 3, 2007 -- If you arrived late to this afternoon's North Coast Athletic Conference football contest between Oberlin College and Kenyon College, you may have missed a load of points early on. Senior Chris Schubert scored for the third time in his career on a kick return by taking the opening kickoff 84 yards to the house. The Yeomen never looked back as they scored 28 unanswered points in the first quarter and took a 42-20 lead into the intermission. When it was all said and done, Oberlin celebrated a 63-33 victory over the Lords.

With the win, Oberlin improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC. Kenyon slipped to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in league play with the loss. After Allegheny's loss to Wittenberg earlier this afternoon, the Yeomen are in sole possession of third place in the NCAC.

After falling behind 0-28, Kenyon scored as time expired in the first quarter off a 24-yard pass from Rafael Sanchez to Harry von Kann. Oberlin scored its second, third, and fourth touchdowns off a six-yard run by Wayne Mundekis, a 13-yard pass from Greg Mangan to Cassius Harris, and a five-yard run by R.V. Carroll.

Carroll scored again with 8:34 left in the second quarter off a three-yard run to put the Yeomen up 35-7. After a Kenyon touchdown through the air, Harris caught his second score of the day, this time from 48 yards out, to put Oberlin up 42-14.

In the third quarter, Carroll scored the only touchdown of the period on a five-yard run. Kenyon scored on a six-yard run by Sanchez to begin the final period, then Oberlin's Chris Pottmeyer, the team's starting left guard, lined up at the fullback position and scored on a one-yard run to give Oberlin a 56-26 advantage.

Senior strong safety Chase Palmer continued his amazing season by picking up a Geoff Sirockman-forced fumble with 3:40 left in the game to score from 29 yards out. Sanchez scored on a 16-yard run with 1:45 remaining in the fourth to make the final score 63-33 in favor of the Yeomen.

Offensively, Oberlin was led by Carroll, who rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries. Mundekis rushed for 46 yards and a score. Cassius Harris caught six passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, while James Brady hauled in five passes for 55 yards. Mangan was again cool and efficient, going 16-21 for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Schubert's touchdown return was the third of his career. He scored on a 97-yard return in 2005 and a 90-yard return in 2004. He has also scored twice on punt returns (once this season and once in 2006). He now holds school records in single-season and career punt and kick return yardage.

Take your pick for a star on the defensive side of the ball for Oberlin. Palmer had an incredible, but almost normal week by his standards, racking up 12 tackles (two for a loss of seven yards), an interception for 14 yards, and a fumble recovery for 29 yards and a touchdown. Geoff Sirockman had 13 tackles and forced two fumbles, Nick Bartlett racked up 13 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Cody Hartley had nine tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception.

Kenyon was led in the loss by Sanchez, who went 24-30 for 301 yards, two scores, and an interception. He was also the team's leading rusher with 112 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries. Carlin Shoemaker led the Lords' receiving corps with 10 catches for 131 yards.

It was just a year ago when Oberlin set an enormous amount of school records in a one-sided win at Kenyon. 2007 was no exception as a number of Oberlin records went down today:

- Oberlin has now scored 282 points this season, a new school record. The Yeomen scored 267 last season, which broke the previous record from 1892.
- Oberlin's 63 points today tied the fifth-highest total in school history. In 1903, the Yeomen scored 63 points against Western Reserve. The team record is 74 points (against Baldwin-Wallace in 1907).
- The Yeomen set a season record for touchdowns with 40. Last season, Oberlin had set the mark with 37 scores.
- Today's total of 512 yards of total offense is fifth all-time. It displaces Oberlin's total of 492 earlier this season against Hiram.
- Oberlin has rushed for 1,496 net yards this season. That moves the team into second all-time (1,493 in 1987). The team record is 1,714 (1963).
- The Yeomen need 262 yards of total offense next Saturday against Allegheny to break the school record of 3,804 set last season.
- First-year Zach Richard made nine extra points today. That breaks his own school record of seven, set earlier this year against Hiram.
- R.V. Carroll has scored a school-record 16 touchdowns on the ground this year. The previous school mark was 12, which he set last year. He already holds the Yeomen's records for overall and rushing touchdowns in a career.

Oberlin will look to even its record to 5-5 next Saturday when Allegheny College visits Savage Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. NCAC contest. The game will be televised by SportsTime Ohio at 8:00 p.m.
