September 2, 2006 -- The Oberlin football team lost a heartbreaker to host Case Western Reserve University this evening, dropping the non-conference contest to the Spartans in overtime, 23-29.
Oberlin jumped onto the board early off a 53-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Greg Mangan to junior Chris Schubert with 12:10 left in the first quarter. After a 22-yard field goal by senior Mike Tomlinson, Oberlin found itself up 10-0. Two field goals by Case in the second quarter brought the Spartans to within four, 6-10, heading into halftime.
Sophomore running back R.V. Carroll opened the third quarter with a bang for the Yeomen as he scored on a 86-yard run five minutes into the period. After a Case touchdown and another score by Schubert (19-yard pass from Andy Stein), Oberlin led 23-12 with 13:24 remaining in the game. Case rallied, though, scoring ten points in the final seven minutes, capped by a 26-yard field goal by Brian Calderone to put the game into overtime.
Mike Tomlinson's kick was blocked in overtime and Case's Dan Whalen scored on a one-yard run to give the Spartans the 29-23 victory.
For the game, Carroll rushed for 161 yards and one touchdown, while Schubert had five receptions for 112 yards and two scores. Mangan finished the game 11-21 with a touchdown and interception.
Defensively, the Yeomen were paced by juniors Chase Palmer and R.J. Parker, who both had 8.5 tackles in the game. Parker added 1.5 sacks as well. Sophomore Zach Warner also had an interception for the Yeomen.
Oberlin will host Heidelberg College on September 9 for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference showdown at Dill Field.
