Eight Named All-Conference

November 22, 2005 ---The Oberlin College football team placed eight players on the 2005 All-NCAC squads, including two first-team choices. Senior defensive back Vance Murphy and sophomore receiver Chris Schubert were all selected to the first team. A pair of defensive linemen, senior Shawn Brunner and sophomore Chris Pisani, were named to the second-team defense, while junior kicker Mike Tomlinson was chosen on the special teams second-team. Earning honorable mention selection was sophomore center Caleb Buck, senior offensive lineman Joe DeHondt and sophomore defensive back Cody Hartley.

Murphy was third in the NCAC with 100 tackles and a 10.0 per game average. He reached double figures in tackles in nine of Oberlin's 11 games. Murphy also added 16.0 tackles for loss, four interceptions, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Schubert led the conference in receiving, with an average of 76.7 yards per game. He also led in kick returns with an average of 27.9 per game, including a career-high 97-yard return against Macalester.

Brunner finished out the season with 4.5 sacks and 42 tackles. Pisani led the NCAC in total sacks (13.0) and forced fumbles (4). The sophomore also totaled 59 tackles. Tomlinson was third in the conference in punting, with an average of 37.6 yards per punt.

Seniors Go Out on Top

November 12, 2005 ---The Oberlin College football team scored 39 points in the second half on its way to a 52-17 rout of Hiram College on Senior Day in Oberlin Saturday afternoon.

After a first half rife with turnovers, four for the Yeomen and three for the Terriers, Oberlin would go into halftime with a 13-10 lead. First-year quarterback Greg Mangan would take over the reigns and lead the offense to two touchdowns and a field goal on their first three possessions of the second half, propelling the Yeomen to a 30-10 lead.

"We came in, we didn't panic, and we played up to our skill level," Mangan said. "We have a great group of seniors and it's good to send them off with a win."

Senior wideout Chad Kutting, who had three receptions for 44 yards, scored the first touchdown of his career with 6:15 left in the fourth quarter to bring the Yeomen's total to 52 points on the day.

"We hung onto the ball and took advantage of good field position," Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "Chad finally got his touchdown, and that was a great way to finish. It's been great working with these seniors."

Senior strong safety and co-captain Vance Murphy led the defense with 13 total tackles, including 6.5 tackles for a loss. Sophomore defensive end Chris Pisani had four sacks, bringing him with 13 sacks on the season, a new Oberlin College single-season record. The offense was led by Mangan, who was 5 for 11 for 165 yards and three touchdowns. The rushing attack was paced by both first-year R.V. Carroll and junior Ray Cummerlander. Carroll had 21 rushes for 108 yards and two touchdowns, while Cummerlander had nine rushes for 86 yards and one touchdown, giving him an amazing average of 9.8 yards per carry.

The Yeomen finish their season with a 3-7 overall record and a 2-5 NCAC record.

Bishops Defense Stifles Yeomen

November 5, 2005 --- Ohio Wesleyan University forced three turnovers and held Oberlin College to 60 yards passing in a 24-14 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Bishops opened the scoring 1:50 into the second quarter when an Oberlin fumble resulted in a short field for OWU. Ryan Sir Louis found Rick Rogers from eight yards out to stake Ohio Wesleyan to a 7-0 lead.

An eight-play, 43-yard drive for the Yeomen stalled at the OWU, but Mike Tomlinson nailed a 23-yard field goal to cut the Bishop advantage to 7-3. The Bishops added a field goal to take a 10-3 lead into halftime.

Ohio Wesleyan put the game away with the opening drive of the second half. The Bishops marched 84 yards in 13 plays, culminating in a 14-yard scamper by Matt Carducci to extend the OWU lead to 17-3. Oberlin managed another field goal and an 11-yard R.V. Carroll touchdown run, but Ohio Wesleyan held on for the 10-point win.

"We were ready for a physical game," Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "We matched up well, and we planned well, we just couldn't convert our opportunities."

Carroll provided the statistical highlight of the day for Oberlin, gaining 93 yards on six rushes. R.J. Parker led the defense with eight tackles. The Yeomen, now 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC, wrap up their season next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home matchup with Hiram College.

Stein Smashes Record in Defeat

October 29, 2005 --- Sophomore quarterback Andy Stein rolled to more than 400 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon, but Denison University seized more opportunities in a 32-26 defeat of Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon.

Stein rifled four touchdown passes on the day, completed 25 of 50 passes for 349 yards, and ran for 60 more in a record-setting defeat. The signal-caller snared the Oberlin mark for passing yards with the effort, but the Big Red used a pair of first-half opportunities to seal the win.

After Fred Lee scampered for a 43-yard touchdown to put Denison 13-7 in the second quarter, the Big Red recovered a fumbled kickoff at the Oberlin 25 yard-line. Denison took five plays to score on a Brian Lee one-yard plunge, which put the Big Red up 19-7.

Sophomore Cassius Harris ran a fade route for a four-yard touchdown to bring Oberlin to within 19-14 with 4:27 left in the first half. When the Yeomen failed to convert a fourth and four at the Big Red 30 with 57 second left, Denison quickly went to work. The Big Red marched 70 yard in 21 seconds thanks to a 62-yard run by Frank Roe to take a 25- 14 advantage into the locker room.

"They really forced us out of our running game," Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "Our defense did a great job of stopping them, but we couldn't get within two possessions until it was too late."

Sophomore Chris Schubert had another great afternoon at receiver. The Oberlin native caught 10 balls for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Classmate Cassius Harris grabbed six catches for 93 yards and a score. Sophomore R.J. Parker totaled eight tackles, including 2.5 for loss.

The Yeomen, now 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC, travel to Delaware, Ohio, next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Scots Escape Dill Field With Win

October 22, 2005 --- Dustin Sheppard ran for 250 yards and two touchdowns as The College of Wooster hung on to defeat Oberlin College 20-19 in football action on Saturday afternoon.

The back-and-forth affair, which was marred by eight total turnovers and 104 penalty yards, ultimately came down to the final possession. Down by a point with less than a minute to play, first-year quarterback Greg Mangan led the Yeomen 39 yards in 30 seconds before his final pass was intercepted by Jeff Geffert at the Wooster eight- yard line. The Scots ran the final 10 seconds off the clock to preserve the win.

Wooster opened the socring at 12:31 of the first quarter when Sheppard scampered in for a four-yard touchdown run. Oberlin came back less than three minutes later on a 20-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Andy Stein to classmate Cassius Harris . The PAT sailed wide, however, and the Scots took a 7-6 lead through the opening quarter.

The Yeomen snagged the advantage at 10:21 of the second quarter off an outstanding special teams play from Vance Murphy . The senior co- captain blocked a punt and returned the ball 25 yards for a touchdown
to give Oberlin a 12-7 lead at the half.

Wooster answered at 11:52 of the third quarter with another Sheppard touchdown run. The Scots missed the extra point (the third missed attempt by either team in the game) to go ahead 13-12. What followed was one of the more exciting plays in recent Oberlin College history. While attempting a 32-yard field goal, holder Chris Schubert juggled the snap, evaded two tacklers, and heaved a 15-yard touchdown pass to kicker Mike Tomlinson for the go-ahead score. This time, Tomlinson's extra point was true and Oberlin led 19-13 heading into the final quarter.

"I bobbled the snap and ran left," Schubert said. "Luckily Mike was still running. I lobbed it up, and he caught it."

The Scots marched back, however, and put the game away with a 12-play, 69-yard scoring drive which ended with a five-yard Mike Marshall touchdown catch from quarterback Justin Schafer. Wooster lept ahead 20-19 on the score, an advantage they would not relinquish.

"Our defense played their tails off," Oberlin Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "We need to get things going offensively and put some points on the board."

The Yeomen were paced by Harris, who caught four balls for 63 yards, and Schubert, who had an even 200 all-purpose yards. Murphy totaled eight tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, a forced fumble, an interception, a blocked punt, and a touchdown.

Oberlin, now 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in the NCAC, travels to Denison University next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

Schubert Named Offensive Player of the Week

October 17, 2005 --- Sophomore wide receiver Chris Schubert was named North Coast Athletic Conference offensive player of the week.

Schubert caught six passes for 109 yards, and rushed five times for 51 yards and a touchdown in the Yeomen's 13-10 victory over Earlham College. He scored the game-winning touchdown on a 41-yard run from scrimmage with 11:47 left in the game, giving Oberlin its first NCAC victory of the year.

Defense Proves Key to Victory

October 15, 2005 --- Oberlin College used stellar defense and big-play offense to defeat the Earlham College Quakers 13-10 on Saturday.

The Yeomen started off the game with two turnovers, including a fumble on the opening kickoff. Earlham capitalized on the Yeomen's second turnover, a fumble by quarterback Andy Stein, but had to settle for a field goal thanks to stingy defense by the Yeomen. The Yeomen got on the board with a 3 yard touchdown run by first-year running back R.V. Carrol with 10:26 to go in the 2nd quarter. The extra point was blocked, leaving the Yeomen with a 6-3 lead. Earlham retook the lead with 1:43 left in the 2nd on an 11-yard pass from first-year quarterback Randy Kerns to first-year tight end Derek Freshwater. Earlham maintained the lead until early in the fourth when Chris Schubert broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run, putting the Yeomen ahead 13-10.

The Yeomen's defense dominated Earlham, especially in the second half. Sophomore Chris Pisani extended his lead in total sacks in the NCAC and caused a fumble. Junior Andy Estep had a sack as well. Sophomore Nick Bartlett had a key interception in the second quarter to keep the Yeomen in the game.

"Obviously this was a huge win for us. We didn't play very well in the first half, but we played well enough to win in the second half," Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "Our defense dominated the field today. They just came up really big for us."

Sophomore receiver Chris Schubert paced the Yeomen offense with six receptions for 109 yards and 5 rushes for 51 yards, including a touchdown.

Oberlin, now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC, hosts the College of Wooster at 1:00 p.m. next Saturday.

Wabash Wears Down Oberlin

October 8, 2005 --- Wabash College used three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to defeat Oberlin College 42-7 in football on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeomen stayed with the Little Giants through two-plus quarters of play. Wabash opened the scoring with a 93-yard Geoff Walker punt return for a score 1:46 into the second quarter. Brandon Roop scooted into the endzone from eight yards away to stake the Little Giants to a 14-0 halftime lead. After Graham Nelson caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Russ Harbaugh in the third quarter, Oberlin fought right back. Senior Chad Kutting hauled in a 27 yard pass from sophomore Andy Stein to set up a one-yard plunge by first-year R.V. Carroll, and Oberlin had cut the lead to 21-7

Senior Vance Murphy picked off Harbaugh on Wabash's next possession, but the Yeomen momentum was stopped on a turnover of their own one play later. The Little Giants put up 21 points over the next 20 minutes to seal the win.

"Our turnover after Vance's interception was the turning point in the game for us," Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "For 40 minutes, we played championship caliber football. We didn't finish off drives, but we moved the ball against the best defense in the conference."

First-year Chris Schubert and Kutting paced the Yeomen receivers. Schubert caught seven balls for 71 yards, while Kutting nabbed five passes for 63 yards. Murphy totaled 11 tackles to go with his interception.

Oberlin, now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC, hosts Earlham College at 1:00 p.m. next Saturday.

Kenyon Defeats Oberlin in a Fight to the Finish

October 1 , 2005 --- The Oberlin College Yeomen had a last second field goal attempt miss wide left as the Kenyon College Lords pulled out a narrow victory 21-20 on Saturday afternoon in Oberlin.

The Yeomen jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a touchdown reception by Cassius Harris. Kenyon tied it up at 7, but then Oberlin exploded out to a 20-7 lead. The Yeomen couldn't stop Kenyon's Alby Coombs, who rushed for 165 yards on 33 attempts. Kenyon closed the gap to 20-14, and grabbed the lead with only 1:30 left on a 1-yard touchdown run by Casey McConnell.

With the clock running against them and needing a field goal to take the lead, the Yeomen moved the ball downfield quickly on a number of sideline completions by quarterback Andy Stein. The Yeomen moved into field goal range with less than eight seconds left, getting the ball to the 17-yard line. However, a costly delay of game penalty on Oberlin moved the ball back five yards, and kicker Michael Tomlinson's 38-yard field goal attempt narrowly missed to the left, sealing the victory for Kenyon.

"It was a tough game," Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "We couldn't convert a third down in the 2nd half. We put ourselves in position to win it and we just couldn't finish."

The Yeomen travel to Wabash College for a 1:00 pm central contest in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Yeomen Nab Big Win at Macalester

September 10, 2005 --- Oberlin College put on an offensive display Saturday afternoon in Saint Paul, Minnesota, as the Yeomen defeated Macalester College 44-14. The win marked the first non-conference victory for Head Coach Jeff Ramsey.

The Yeomen dominated from the opening kickoff. On a windy afternoon where field position was a premium, Oberlin controlled the ball and worked the field to their advantage. Strong-legged Mike Tomlinson opened the scoring after a six-play 24 yard drive by knocking a 27-yard field goal into the wind. The Yeomen led 3-0 at 7:20 into the first quarter. R.V. Carroll broke off a 62 yard run 3:12 later to put Oberlin up 10-0 after the first quarter.

"This was a great performance for us," Ramsey said. "All three facets of the game fired for us today. We have some things to work on, but overall we had a great effort."

The Yeomen continued to roll in the second quarter. Carroll added a 31 yard touchdown run, followed by an Andy Stein one yard plunge to put Oberlin ahead 24-0. Tomlinson, now with the wind at his back, fired through a 55 yard field goal with four second left in the half to boost the lead to 27-0. His kick broke the school record by nine yards.

Chris Schubert opened the second half with a 97 yard kickoff return to put the Yeomen up 34-0. Macalester came back with a touchdown four minutes later, but Oberlin closed out the game with another Tomlinson field goal and a 42 yard pitch and catch from Greg Mangan to Schubert.

"The big message we sent all week is that we need trust, and we need to find our identity," Ramsey said. "We wanted to play intelligently, and play with immediacy."

The Yeomen were led by 117 rushing yard on 16 carries from Carroll. Schubert grabbed seven catches for 92 yards, while Chris Pisani put on an other-worldly show on defense. He finished with 11 tackles, six for loss, and four sacks. Pisani also forced and recovered a fumble.

Oberlin is off next week. The Yeomen travel to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on September 24 for a 1:30 p.m. central time contest in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Yeomen Rally Falls Short

September 3, 2005 --- Oberlin College staged a furious rally in the final 28 minutes of Saturday's football contest with Case Western Reserve University. Down 27-7 with 12: left in the third quarter, the Yeomen scored three touchdowns and held the Spartans out of the endzone. Only a 42-yard Case field goal at the 13:13 mark of the fourth quarter gave the Spartans a 30-27 victory.

The Yeomen marched back in the second half on the arm of quarterback Andy Stein, the legs of running back R.V. Carroll, and the heart of safety Vance Murphy. Stein drove Oberlin 77 yards on 11 plays, capped by a six- yard touchdown pass to Cassius Harris to cut the deficit to 27-14. Carroll, who ran for 121 yards on 21 carries in his Yeomen debut, plunged into the endzone from one yard out to make it 30-20 with 4:58 to play. Stein fed Harris 3:15 later on a beautiful pump-fake, resulting in a 60-yard score and a 30-27 lead for Case. Murphy then rose to the occassion, led the Oberlin defense to a three-and-out series, and gave his offense the ball at their own 43 with 1:07 to play. The Yeomen could not quite finish the comeback, however, ending their hopes of a season opening win.

"This is one of those games you think you should have won," Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. "But you can't take 15 or 20 minutes away form the game and come out on top. We fought back well, and we minimized our mistakes. We'll move on from this and improve."

Stein and Carroll led the Yeomen in passing and rushing, while Harris snagged five balls for 90 yards to pace the Oberlin receivers. Murphy topped the Yeomen defense with seven tackles. Amazingly, neither team turned the ball over the entire game.

"Last year, we needed to correct assignment errors and our control of the football after the first game," Ramsey said. "We are in a different, better place now. I'm impressed with how far our defense has come, and our offense is doing some things well too."

Oberlin, now 0-1 on the season, travels to Macalester College next Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. Eastern game with the Scots.
