Field Hockey Adds Three During Early Decision Period

March 11 – Head field hockey coach Deb Ranieri announced the addition of three newcomers to her field hockey program for the fall of 2008.

Joining the Yeowomen next season will be Emily Whitaker, Sarah Yeager and Eugenie ‘Nuni’ Montaigne as they have applied and been accepted to Oberlin during the early decision period.

“We are very excited to be adding all three of these players to our program,” Ranieri Said.

Whitaker comes to Oberlin from Pelham Memorial High School in New York. For the past three seasons she has led her team in scoring and has earned all-league honors. She has also been named to the all-sectional team in each of the past two seasons.

“I am extremely excited to come to Oberlin and meet different people from all across the country,” Whitaker said. “I also can’t wait to play some intense field hockey with so many talented players.”

“Emily will be a great addition to our offensive,” Ranieri said. “She should be able to come in and make an immediate impact.”

Yeager hails from Lebanon, New Hampshire, where she is currently attending the Cushing Academy. She brings a strong passion and love of the game to Oberlin. Yeager is a hard worker that has earned her team’s defensive MVP award, as well as a spot on the all-star team at the New England Field Hockey Showcase.

"Sarah is expected to come in and start for us next season,” Ranieri said. “She is a premiere defender that we will also use on offensive corners as she is a very good striker.”

Like Whitaker, Montaigne is native of New York. She is currently attending Fieldston School, which is the same high school as current field-hockey athlete Danielle Gilliam. Her high school team has experienced great success as AAIS and Ivy League Champions. They have also reached the state semi-finals in each of the past two seasons.

“ Nuni is a hard worker that will also fit in nicely to our program,” Ranieri said.

Oberlin finished last season 8-11 overall and 7-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Yeowomen made it to the NCAC semi-finals before falling to top-seeded Wittenberg, 7-3, in 2007.
