The Oberlin college women’s field hockey continued
their strong performance in the NCAC as they hung on
for a 1-0 victory over visiting Wittenberg University. A
first-half goal by sophomore Catherine Meredith was
enough for the Yeowomen to earn the victory as they
improve their record to 6-8 (5-3), while the Tigers
fall to 7-6 (4-4).
Meredith’s goal with 13 minutes remaining in
the first half proved to be the game winner. Wittenberg
would put on the pressure in the second half, including
eight penalty corners, but were unable to sneak one
past the Oberlin defense. With time expired
Wittenberg had a penalty corner and a last chance to
tie the game, but the Yeowomen were able to prevail
and finally cleared the ball after several tries.
The Yeowomen played a strong defensive game led by
the play of senior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski who
racked up 12 saves in preserving the shut-out, her
third shut-out in four games. The Yeowomen also
made seven team defensive saves to help blank Wittenberg. The
Tigers created numerous offensive chances as they outshot
Oberlin 15 to 7. First-year goalkeeper Liana Began
made two saves for Wittenberg in addition to five team
defensive saves. The Tigers had 13 penalty corners
while the Yeowomen had four.
The Yeowomen return to action on Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m.
when they travel to NCAC rival The College of Wooster.
