Oberlin Field Hockey Team Falls to Wittenberg University, 3-7, in NCAC Semifinal Contest; Yeowomen Finish 2007 Season at 8-11

October 31, 2007 -- The Oberlin field hockey squad traveled southwest to Springfield, Ohio, to face North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wittenberg University in a Halloween league semifinal contest. The Tigers rolled to a 7-3 win over the Yeowomen. The 10 goals set the NCAC tournament record for most goals scored by two teams. Wittenberg, the #1 seed in the tournament, will play in the NCAC championships match on Saturday.

Senior Kaitlin Barrer scored Oberlin's only goal of the first half. First-year Taylor Rogers reached the back of the cage in the second half on an assist from junior attacker Abigail Brox, while sophomore Catherine Meredith also scored off a penalty corner in the final period courtesy of an assist from Barrer.

Goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski had a strong game in her final game as a Yeowoman. She saved 10 shots in 70 minutes of action.

Oberlin was out-shot in the contest, 5-20, and Wittenberg had a narrow advantage in penalty corners, 9-8.

Wittenberg was led by Boo Vernon and Alison Voigt, who both had two goals.

The loss marks the end of outstanding careers by seniors Barrer, Malinowski, Christine Politis, Ashley Allen, and Sheera Bornstein. They will surely be missed in 2008, but a strong young group of players will look to take over the reigns next fall.

With the loss, Oberlin finishes its 2007 season with an 8-11 overall record and a solid 7-5 mark against league competition. For final statistics from this season, please Click Here.
