Abigail Brox records hat trick in non-conference victory
-- The 2006 field hockey season began in excellent fashion this afternoon for the Oberlin College Yeowomen, who soundly defeated visiting Sewanee (The University of the South), 3-1. Sophomore Abigail Brox scored all three of Oberlin's goals and junior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski saved 22 shots en route to the non-conference win. With the victory, Oberlin improves to 1-0 on the young season and Sewanee (Tenn.) falls to 0-1.
Oberlin looked as it if would run away early from the Tigers, as Brox converted on a shot just 1:20 into the contest. Brox, the 2005 North Coast Athletic Conference leader in scoring and Newcomer of the Year, scored again 11:30 into the first half to give her squad a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later, though, Sewanee's Catherine Avery scored on a penalty stroke to bring the Tigers to within one. The game remained locked at 2-1 for the next 68 minutes until Brox scored off a pass from junior Christine Politis with two minutes remaining in the game.
Despite being out-shot 11-22, the Yeowomen made the most of their scoring opportunities this afternoon. The Tigers kept their scoring attempts close to the cage; however, Malinowski thwarted all of the visitors' field shots as well as two penalty strokes.
Oberlin will waste little time returning to action as Centre College (Ky.) visits the Yeowomen tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
