Holly Sloofman's (So.) defensive save against W&J increased her NCAC-leading total to eight
Oberlin Field Hockey Squad Edged by Washington and Jefferson College, 0-1

October 4, 2006 -- The Oberlin field hockey team hosted Washington and Jefferson College this afternoon with hopes of ending a three-game losing streak. The Presidents had a different plan, though, winning 1-0 and handing the Yeowomen their fourth consecutive close loss. With the defeat, Oberlin slid to 4-6 overall, while Washington and Jefferson bettered its record to 7-3.

After 17:16 of scoreless play, the Presidents' Amanda Howard scored an unassisted goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead that would end up being enough to edge the Yeowomen. Washington and Jefferson racked up 24 shots on the day to Oberlin's 12, but outstanding play by junior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski, which included 12 saves, helped prevent the Presidents from reaching the net in the second half.

Junior midfielder Christine Politis had eight shots this afternoon, increasing her team-leading total to 42. Juniors Ashley Allen and Leslie Ruster and senior co-captain Claire Cheney had one shot apiece for the Yeowomen. First-year Theresa Desautels and sophomore Holly Sloofman both had defensive saves. Sloofman's save was her eighth of the year, which is tops in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Desautels is second in the conference with four defensive saves.

Head Coach Deb Ranieri and her defending NCAC Champion Yeowomen will return to conference action on October 10 when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to face Ohio Wesleyan University at 4:30 p.m.
