October 10, 2006 -- After finding themselves down 0-3 with only 22:43 remaining, the Oberlin field hockey team battled back with three unanswered goals to send today's game at Ohio Wesleyan into overtime. The host Battling Bishops scored quickly in the bonus period, though, to earn a 4-3 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Yeowomen. Oberlin fell to 4-7 (2-5 NCAC) with the loss, while Ohio Wesleyan improved to 4-5 (3-4 NCAC) with the win.
The Battling Bishops led just 1-0 at the half, then scored two goals in the second period to boast a 3-0 advantage 47:17 into the contest. First-year Catherine Meredith score two goals and junior Ashley Allen notched a score to tie the game at 3-3 with just under ten minutes left to play. After neither team scored the rest of regulation, Ohio Wesleyan's Shannon McHenry scored 51 seconds into overtime to give the hosts the conference victory.
Junior Christine Politis assisted both of Meredith's goals this afternoon, while senior co-captain Claire Cheney fed Allen for her score. Defensively, junior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski had six saves on the day and first-year Theresa Desautels picked up her fifth defensive save of the 2006 campaign.
Oberlin tallied a whopping 38 shots for the game, compared to Ohio Wesleyan's 29. The Yeowomen also held the advantage in corner kicks, 15-7. Oberlin has lost its last five games by only a combined seven goals.
With only five NCAC games left in the Yeowomen's regular season, they will visit Earlham College (Ind.) on Saturday for an early 11:00 a.m. contest.
