October 15, 2006 -- After splitting a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference contests this week, the Oberlin field hockey team ventured outside of the NCAC to play DePauw University. In the Sunday afternoon showdown at Greencastle, Indiana, the Yeowomen were held scoreless by the Tigers, losing 0-1 and falling to 5-8 on the year. DePauw improved to 7-5 with the win.
Melissa Davis scored the game's only goal 25:56 into the first half, securing the win for DePauw. The hosts out-shot Oberlin 20-11 and had three more penalty corners than the Yeowomen.
DePauw held Oberlin's prolific scorers, first-year Catherine Meredith and sophomore Abigail Brox, mostly in check throughout the game. Brox, the 2005 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, had one shot for the day, while Meredith, this week's NCAC Player of the Week, did not have a shot attempt.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski had 13 saves against the Tigers, while senior co-captains Sam Kyrkostas and Claire Cheney both had three shots for Oberlin.
"We played well today, but we just need to take more shots," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We definitely had two strong opportunities to score in the first half, and we need to do a bit better job of finishing."
The Yeowomen return to action on October 18 in an away contest at NCAC opponent Kenyon College. The game against the Ladies is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
