Junior Christine Politis had eight shots in a 0-2 loss to Denison on Sept. 30
Yeowomen Defeated by Denison, 0-2

September 30, 2006 -- Head Coach Deb Ranieri's Oberlin field hockey team looked to rebound from a recent heartbreaking loss to Wooster by taking on North Coast Athletic Conference opponent Denison University this evening. Oberlin's trip to Granville, Ohio was spoiled by the play of Denison's defense, though, which kept the Yeowomen off the scoreboard to earn a 2-0 win. Oberlin slides to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the the NCAC with the loss, while the hosts bettered their record to 3-6 and 2-3 in the conference.

The Big Red scored a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes of the game to take an early 2-0 lead. Oberlin threatened on numerous occasions in the next 58 minutes of play, but Denison held on for the NCAC win.

Junior midfielder Christine Politis gave the Yeowomen their best chances to score today, racking up a team-best eight shots. Senior co-captain Sam Kyrkostas also had a chance to score on a penalty shot in the second half, but her attempt was thwarted by Denison's goalkeeper, Carter Hartung.

Senior co-captain Claire Cheney had five shots for Oberlin, while junior Ashley Allen added three shot attempts. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski saved 11 shots in 70 minutes of action.

For the game, Denison out-shot the Yeowomen 31-24 and held a 17-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Oberlin's next contest will be at home on October 4 against Washington and Jefferson College (Pa.). The contest against the Presidents is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
