September 16, 2006 -- The Oberlin field hockey team headed into today’s contest with a solid conference win against Ohio Wesleyan University earlier this week under their belt; however, Denison scored five first-half goals to defeat the Yeowomen this afternoon, 5-3. Oberlin put up a good fight today, rallying for two unanswered scores in the second period, but came up just short against a tough Big Red squad. The Yeowomen are now 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference and 3-2 overall, while Denison evened its record to 1-1 in NCAC competition.
Early on in the first period, Denison secured three goals before Oberlin was able to respond, with two scores coming from Caitlin Gilman. First-year Catherine Meredith put the Yeowomen on the scoreboard with a great assist from sophomore Abigail Brox. Denison racked up two more goals before the first half ended.
In the second half, the Yeowomen trailed by four goals but were able to pick up the pace as Meredith scored an unassisted goal early with 31 minutes left in the game. Soon after Meredith’s goal, junior Ashley Allen scored to put Oberlin within striking distance at 3-5. Senior co-captain Claire Cheney and junior Christine Politis each had two shots at the goal late in the second half, while senior co-captain Samantha Kyrkostas, first-year Theresa Desautels, and Brox also had shot attempts in the final period.
“It was a tough loss,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We had the skills, had the team, and physically we were there, but we just weren’t there mentally.”
The Yeowomen will play next on September 20 when they host Kenyon College at 4:30 p.m.
