Seven Athletes Named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad

February 27, 2006 -- The National Field Hockey Coaches Association selected Ashley Allen, Sheera Bornstein, Claire Cheney, Grace Eginton, Samantha Kyrkostas, Rosemary Mudry and Holly Sloofman to the 2005 National Academic Squad.

The NFHCA recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2005-06 academic year.

Oberlin College was also named to the Division III National Academic Team. by the This is awarded to institutions that achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2005-06 academic year.

Ranieri Named Division III Regional Coach of the Year

December 2, 2005 -- The NFHCA named Oberlin field hockey Head Coach Deb Ranieri the 2005 Dita/NFHCA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year.

Ranieri guided the Yeowomen to their first NCAC regular season and conference tournament titles this year. Oberlin went 13-4 during the regular season, and ended their season with a .762 winning percentage. During Ranieri's four years at the helm of the Oberlin field hockey program, the Yeowomen 47-27.

“It’s truly a team effort for me to get coach of the year,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “Our seniors really defined our season, and we accomplished what we wanted to as a group this year.”

Reitz Named All-American

November 28, 2005 -- Senior captain Meg Reitz has been named to the 2005 Dartfish/NFHCA Division III All-American Second Team.

The senior midfielder had a standout season, and led the North Coast Athletic Conference in points (33) and assists (9). She's notched 38 goals and 20 assists in a four-year career in Oberlin. Reitz also earned a spot on the All-NCAC First Team and the Division III All-Region Team.

"I don't really know what to say. I'm totally shocked," Reitz said. "Really, the most exciting part of it is looking at the talent of Oberlin field hockey's first-years, sophomores and juniors and seeing that I'm just going to be the first on a list that, very shortly, is about to become quite extensive."

"In the four years that I've watched Meg, she's improved greatly," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "She does a great job of putting herself in a position to make shots. Not only is she a tremendous athlete, but she's a great person. In order for one person to receive this honor, it takes an entire team, and our team had an outstanding season."

Seven Yeowomen Named to All-Conference Team; Five Earn All-Region Recognition

November 20, 2005 -- Rosemary Mudry was named the North Coast Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year for field hockey. Abigail Brox, Meg Reitz, Lela Hull, Claire Cheney, Christine Castilla and Samantha Kyrkostas joined her as All-NCAC selections. The 2005 Dartfish/NFHCA named their Division III All-Region teams. For the Great Lakes Region, Brox, Castilla, Mudry and Reitz were named to the first-team. Hull was chosen for the second-team.

Mudry, a senior back, has recorded four goals, three assists and one defensive save in 2005. She's notched 11 goals, eight assists and 12 defensive saves in a four-year career in Oberlin.

Meg Reitz claimed a spot on the All-NCAC First Team for the second-straight year. The senior midfielder had a standout season, and led the conference in points (33) and assists (9). Earning first-team honors for the first time is Abigail Brox who has emerged as the league's premier scoring threat. The first-year forward leads the league in goals (14) and is just behind Reitz in points (32). For her efforts, Brox was also named Newcomer of the Year.

On the second team is first-year forward Lela Hull who exploded onto the collegiate scene in 2005. Hull finished the season with 11 goals and three assists. Claire Cheney joins Hull on the second team for the first time in her career. The junior midfielder has four goals and two assists on the season. Three of those goals were game-winners. Rounding out the second team is senior back Christine Castilla . She racked up six goals in 2005, with one of the most important being against Lebanon Valley in the first-round of the NCAA tournament.

Earning honorable mention for the second year in a row is junior back Samantha Kyrkostas. Kyrkostas started all 20 games this season and had one assist.

Finally, Head Coach Deb Ranieri was voted Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Yeowomen to their second North Coast championship and their first NCAC tournament title. Ranieri led Oberlin to its first win in the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament, a 1-0 victory over Lebanon Valley in the opening round.

Gulls Thwart Yeowomen’s Bid For Title

November 12, 2005 -- Salisbury University used two penalty stroke goals and 14 penalty corners to upend Oberlin College 4-0 in the round of 16 at the NCAA Division III field hockey tournament on Saturday morning.

The Yeowomen dominated the offensive end for the first 15 minutes of the contest, but the Gulls finally caught a break 18:52 into the match. Brittany Elliot hit her penalty stroke to stake Salisbury to a 1-0 lead. The Gulls found the net 14 minutes later on an unassisted goal by Meg Powell. Tracy Lloyd and Powell also scored in the second half.

“We played fantastic hockey today,” Oberlin Head Coach Deb Ranieri said of her team’s effort against the country’s top-ranked squad. “Our seniors did an outstanding job of leading this team. They helped us turn the corner this year into a nationally-competitive squad.”

Sophomore Lauren Malinowski had another outstanding day between the pipes for the Yeowomen. She faced 27 shots in 70 minutes of play and made 15 saves. Seniors Rosemary Mudry and Rebecca Schugar each had a defensive save in their last game for Oberlin.

The Yeowomen finish the season at 16-5 and collect the program’s first NCAC tournament championship, their first win over a nationally-ranked program, and the first NCAA tournament victory ever.

Yeowomen Advance to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

November 9, 2005 -- A penalty corner goal from senior Christine Castilla gave the Oberlin College field hockey team all that it would need to advance to the next round of the NCAA tournament. The Yeowomen defeated Lebanon Valley College 1-0 in the first round of tournament play on Wednesday afternoon.

Castilla's goal came with 57:22 left in the game. Senior Meg Reitz would get the assist. Oberlin's stingy defense would prove key in the defeat. Sophomore Lauren Malanowski had an amazing afternoon between the pipes. Malanowski tallied 13 saves on the day and added a seventh shutout to her record. Yeowomen defenders Samantha Kyrkostas and Kaitlin Barrer each made a defensive save to preserve the victory.

"Everyone knows that Oberlin is an excellent academic college," Oberlin Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "The students here do amazing things and this is just another way in which they are excelling."

Oberlin advances to the second round to take on the two-time defending Division III national champions, Salisbury University. The game is set for Saturday, November 12 at 10:00 a.m. in Salisbury, Maryland.

Yeowomen Capture Oberlin’s First NCAC Tournament Championship

November 5, 2005 -- The Oberlin College women’s field hockey squad made school history this afternoon, winning the NCAC tournament championship game against The College of Wooster in a 3-0 shut out victory.

The Yeowomen scored their first goal off a shot by first-year Lela Hull just three minutes into the first period, setting the tone early for what would be an emotional and decisive win. Oberlin did not allow Wooster a single shot during the entirety of the first stanza. Up 2-0 going into the second half Oberlin’s strong defense took over, frustrating the Fighting Scots and keeping them off of the scoreboard. Senior Rosemary Mudry had two goals, both off penalty shots.

After the game, the Yeowomen were presented with the NCAC tournament championship trophy, the first in the history of Oberlin College. Rosemary Mudry was named the NCAC tournament MVP. The victory is a milestone for both the school and the field hockey program, which has been on the brink of a NCAA tournament berth for the past three years. “We are very excited,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We’re going to the NCAAs!”

The win gives Oberlin College a record of 15-4 on the year. Having asserted their dominance in the NCAC, the Yeowomen will now host their NCAA first round matchup against Lebanon Valley College (PA), Wednesday, November 9th at 1:00 p.m.

Yeowomen Championship Bound

November 2, 2005 -- The top-seeded Oberlin field hockey team will continue its hunt for the NCAC Tournament title Saturday afternoon as the Yeowomen defeated Denison College 4-2 in the first round of tournament play.

First-year Abigail “Prunie” Brox had the team’s first hat trick of the season. Her first goal came four minutes into the first half off of an assist by senior Christine Castilla. Brox would strike again just before halftime and end her tirade with 20 minutes left on the clock. Sophomore Leslie Ruster added to the win with an unassisted goal in the first half.

“You could feel it during warm-ups today,” senior captain Meg Reitz said. “This team has so much heart, and today was a huge win for us. We just can’t lose focus going into Saturday and finish what we started.”

Head Coach Deb Ranieri and her Yeowomen (14-4) will host third seeded Wooster (11-8). Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 5th.

Field Hockey Drops Season Finale to Wittenberg

October 29, 2005 -- The Oberlin College Field Hockey team fell to Wittenberg 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon, as their five-game winning streak came to an end. Oberlin controlled the action for most of the game, but could not muster more than one goal.

Despite maintaining possession for most of the first half, Oberlin was unable to tally any goals, with Wittenberg goalie Nicole Irvin racking up 20 saves. The Oberlin defense, led by Christine Castilla and Rebecca Schugar were also perfect in the first half, as they did not allow any shots by Wittenberg.

In the second half, first-year Lela Hull opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, two minutes into the second half. Wittenberg’s Katy Barrett answered back, fifteen minutes later, tying the game. Holly McHugh scored the game winner in overtime. The Yeowomen out-shot Wittenberg 30-4, but were unable to put more than the game’s only goal.

“We're excited to be in the conference championships but we are all disappointed with our play today,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We played strong in the first half, but we just didn’t play well enough in the second half. We have some things we need to work on if we want to win the tournament”

The Yeowomen won the NCAC regular season championship, finishing with a record of 13-4-0 and a conference record of 9-3-0. They will host #4 seed Denison in the semi-finals of the NCAC tournament on November 2 at 3 p.m.

Yeowomen Hang Half a Dozen on Earlham

October 22, 2005 -- Two goals by first-year Abigail Brox powered Oberlin College to a 6-0 win over Earlham College in field hockey on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeowomen, who opened the contest with goals from sophomore Ashley Allen and senior Christine Castilla, cruised to a 2-0 lead through 35 minutes. Brox then tallied a pair of unassisted goals within 2:25 to stake Oberlin to a 4-0 advantage. Seniors Rosemary Mudry and Meg Reitz capped the scoring in the final 4:18.

"We took care of business today," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We're continuing to work hard and doing the things that we have practiced."

Sophomore Lauren Malinowski made two saves for Oberlin as the team outshot Earlham 23-2. The squad raised its overall record to 13-2, 9-2 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen, who are ranked first in the region, travel to Maine this Tueday for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with Bates College.

First-Place Field Hockey Notches Another Win

October 18, 2005 -- With a grip on first place going into the last half of North Coast Athletic Conference play, Oberlin College added another win to its record as they defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 1-0.

The game remained scoreless in the first half, but it would be first-year Abigail Brox who would seal the deal for the Yeowomen. The goal came off of an assist by first-year Lela Hull with 10:17 left in the competition.

“We did what we needed to do tonight,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “Sometimes all it takes is one goal.”

Oberlin now stands at 12-2 overall and 8-2 in the NCAC. The team will take on Earlham College this Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Another Triumphant Night for Field Hockey

October 11, 2005 -- Sophomore midfielder Ashley Allen and first-year forward Abigal Brox each tallied one goal and two assists as Oberlin cruised past Washington & Jefferson, 5-1, in field hockey action on Tuesday evening.

By the end of the first half, the damage had been done as Allen and first-year Lela Hull had both scored goals. Allen would go on to assist Brox in the second half. Senior midfielder Meg Reitz would put the final touches on the victory as she scored twice off of penalty corners. Defensively, sophomore goalie Lauren Malanowski continued to shine as she racked up nine saves on the day.

“We played like a turf team tonight,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We’ve learned to control our sticks better on turf, and it showed tonight. We played really well.”

Oberlin moves to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen will have some well deserved rest this weekend as they prepare to take on Ohio Wesleyan University on October 18.

Yeowomen Roll at Denison

October 8, 2005 -- Lauren Malinowski posted her third shutout of the season as Oberlin College rolled to a 3-0 win over Denison University in field hockey on Saturday afternoon.

Tied at 0-0 through 35 minutes of play, first-year Abigail Brox opened the scoring for Oberlin with her seventh goal of the season. Classmate Lela Hull put the Yeowomen up 2-0 minutes later, while senior Christine Castilla wrapped up the Oberlin scoring off a penalty corner. Malinowski turned aside three shots in goal.

“We played another great passing game," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We communicated well and went hard to the ball."

Oberlin moves to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen travel to Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.

Yeowomen Pull Off Sudden Death Victory

October 4, 2005 -- On Tuesday afternoon, the Oberlin College field hockey team proved why they deserve to be at the top of their conference. Bouncing back from Saturday’s loss against Wittenberg University, Oberlin defeated The College of Wooster 4-3 in a dramatic come from behind victory.

Down 2-1 coming into the second half, Oberlin fought back hard and tied the game 2-2 with a goal from senior Christine Castilla. The Yeowomen kept up the intensity and with five minutes remaining in regulation, senior Meg Reitz put in a huge shot to give Oberlin the lead 3-2. With the game all but won, Wooster staged a comeback of their own and re-tied the game 3-3 with only twenty seconds left, taking the match into overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, it came down to a stroke-off. A strong stand by Lauren Malinowsky gave Oberlin a chance to win it in the second round of the best out of five goals. With the score 2-1 in favor of the Yeowomen, senior Rosemary Mudry scored the final goal to give Oberlin an exhilarating victory.

“Wooster took us to penalty shots last year and won, and this year we took them to penalty shots and won. It feels really good,” senior Rosemary Mudry said.

The win moves Oberlin to 9-2 on the year and solidifies their first place position in the NCAC. The Yeowomen will try to make it two in a row this Saturday afternoon when they travel to Denison University for a NCAC conference game.

Field Hockey Win Streak Snapped at Wittenberg

October 1, 2005 -- The Oberlin College Field Hockey team fell to Wittenberg 1-0 on Saturday evening, as their six-game winning streak came to an end in Springfield, Ohio.

Oberlin goalie Lauren Malinowski, racked up 9 saves in the defensive battle, only to be matched by the Tigers’ Nicole Irving. Wittenberg’s Mackenzie Huber scored an unassisted goal with 2:08 remaining in the contest to spoil what could have been Malinowski’s second consecutive shutout. The Yeowomen out-shot Wittenberg 16-15, but were unable to answer the game’s only goal.

“I’m disappointed in the way we played,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We failed to communicate and didn’t play up to our potential. We can play much better than what we played tonight.”

The team will look to begin a new winning streak on Tuesday, October 4th as it hosts The College of Wooster in a 4:30 contest.

Field Hockey Beats Kenyon, Avenges Only Loss

September 28, 2005 -- Today's win was especially meaningful as Oberlin College shut out Kenyon College 3-0, avenging its only loss of the season.

Senior tri-captain Meg Reitz scored a first half goal off of a rebound, but it wasn't until the final moments of the game that the Yeowomen secured a comfortable lead. With ten minutes left in the second half, first-year Abigail Brox scored on an assist from Reitz. Senior Christine Castilla topped off the win with an exhilarating goal just 15 seconds before the celebration could begin. Sophomore Laura Malinowski deflected three Kenyon attempts in her second shutout of the season.

Following practices dedicated to defense, Reitz attributed much of the success to Oberlin's resistance against Kenyon's offense. "We went into the game with a main focus of recovery. We played a great defensive game," she explained.

The Yeowomen's recent winning streak, now six consecutive victories, has carried them into an 8-1 standing. The team will travel to Wittenberg University on October 1 for a 6 p.m. match.

Oberlin Field Hockey Moves Up in National Rankings

September 27, 2005 -- The Oberlin College field hockey team has reason to smile these days. The Division III national statistics were released today, and the Yeowomen are ranked in several categories. The team stands eighth in winning percentage, fifth in scoring offense and 10th in margin of victory. Senior tri-captain Meg Reitz is ranked fourth in assists per game.

"It's exciting at how well and how competitive this team is playing right now," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "Overall, I think it shows how far the program has come in a short amount of time. We're working really hard to be competitive with other nationally ranked teams."

The squad, which is 7-1, will attempt to avenge its only loss of the season as they face Kenyon College at home on September 28.

Make It Five in a Row for Field Hockey

September 24, 2005 -- Oberlin College continued their winning streak, as they defeated Denison University on their home field 3-1. The Yeowomen went into halftime tied at one, but then came out in the second half and scored two quick goals.

First-year Abigail Brox had another solid game as she scored the only goal in the first 35 minutes. Two minutes into the second half, Lela Hull, put Oberlin ahead for good off an assist by Meg Reitz. Nearly four minutes later, the Yeowomen's passing game struck again, as Christine Castilla scored the final goal of the game with an assist from Claire Cheney.

"We worked harder in the second half," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We played our game and scored two quick goals. I really like the way this team is playing right now. "

The Yeowomen are now 7-1 and host Kenyon College on September 28 at 4:30 p.m.

Second Half Streak Paces Field Hockey

September 21, 2005 -- Although their aggressive style of play showed from the start, the Oberlin College field hockey team went into halftime with a tied score of 1-1 against Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening. The Yeowomen blew up in the second half for three unanswered goals in route to a 4-1 win.

First year player, Lela Hull, scored the opening goal, as well as the first of the second half, setting the stage for Oberlin's victory. Consecutive goals by Abigail Brox and Christine Castilla sealed the deal, although the whole team was involved in holding off the Bishops.

"We were a perfect definition of a team. We passed really well," Hull explained. "What it comes down to in big games like these is heart."

The squad had enough heart to notch their fourth successive victory, running their record to 6-1. Head Coach Deb Ranieri has brought the team to a national ranking of 18th in winning percentage. The Yeowomen host Denison University Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Six Score Goals as Field Hockey Rolls

September 17, 2005 --- A half dozen Oberlin College players made their way into the scoring column on Saturday as the Yeowomen defeated Earlham College 7-1 in field hockey.

Oberlin, which entered the game as the fifth-highest scoring offense in the nation, jumped to a 5-0 first half lead on the strength of a goal and two assists by first-year Abigail Brox. Senior Meg Reitz notched two goals to lead all scorers, while first-year Lauren Malinowski and sophomore Sheera Bornstein split time in goal.

"We played very well in the first half," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We had worked on some things in practice which we applied on the offensive end in the first half."

Rose Mudry tallied three defensive saves for Oberlin, which improves to 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen host Ohio Wesleyan University on September 21 at 4:30 p.m.

Cheney Nets Another Game-Winner for Field Hockey

September 14, 2005 -- Claire Cheney notched her second straight game winning goal as Oberlin College stopped The College of Wooster 1-0 in field hockey on Wednesday evening.

Cheney broke a scoreless tie with 9:22 remaining on a penalty corner and assist from Kaitlin Barrer. This was the second time Cheney had put the Yeowomen over the top in as many games. She hit the game winner against DePauw on Saturday.

"We really played an excellent passing game today," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We had a couple of lapses, but our goalie bailed us out."

Lauren Malinowski made seven saves between the pipes, while Rose Mudry notched a defensive save. Oberlin managed 14 shots on goal.

The win improves the Yeowomen to 4-1 on the season. Oberlin travels to Earlham on Saturday for a 10:00 a.m. match.

Field Hockey Settles Score with DePauw

September 10, 2005 -- Claire Cheney scored the game-winning goal with 7:30 left in the second overtime as Oberlin College defeated DePauw University 4-3 in field hockey on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeowomen, who had lost two previous meeting with the Tigers, fell in a 2-0 hole early in the contest. A pair of goals by Lela Hull tied the game at 3-3, setting the stage for Cheney’s clincher.

“We kept fighting,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “Lauren (Malinowski) played great in goal, and Claire made a great move at the top of the circle to get the game-winner.”

The Yeowomen climb to 3-1 on the season. Oberlin travels to Wooster on September 14 for a 4:30 p.m. matchup with the Scots.

Kenyon Shuts Down Yeowomen

September 8, 2005 -- Julia Boyer scored the overtime winner as Kenyon College defeated Oberlin College 1-0 in field hockey on Thursday evening.

The Yeowomen put more than twice as many shots on goal as the Ladies, 17-8, and led in penalty corners 13-8. Oberlin goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski turned aside six shots in the loss.

"We played well and we hustled," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "But we didn't finish. This is a good wake up for us. We need to play the complete game to win."

Oberlin falls to 2-1 on the season. The Yeowomen host DePauw University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Yeowomen Remain Unbeaten

September 3, 2005 -- Meg Reitz notched the game-winning goal with 21 minutes left in the game as Oberlin College defeated Centre College 3-2 in field hockey on Saturday afternoon.

Reitz opened the scoring at 50:25 on an assist from Lela Hull. After Centre tied the game at 41:07, Rosemary Mudry answered on a feed from reitz to put Oberlin ahead 2-1 after one half. Centre tied the game at 2-2 before Reitz hit the game winner on a penalty corner pass from Mudry.

"We came out a little tired," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "But we finished strong today. Our second half is a sign of how fit we are as a team and how hard our players have worked over the summer."

Oberlin, now 2-0 on the season, travels to Kenyon College for a 4:30 p.m. match on Thursday.

Yeowomen Start Season With a Bang

September 2, 2005 -- The fall sports season commenced in style on Friday afternoon in Lexington, Kentucky, as Oberlin College throttled Transylvania University 7-1 in field hockey.

The Yeowomen found themselves deadlocked with the Pioneers through 35 minutes, but the second-half play of seniors Umra Omar and Meg Reitz led to six unanswered goals.

“We regrouped and did a better job of communicating in the second half,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We were able to hold the length of the field and spread things out. That let us go deeper on offense. I’m really pleased with how we adjusted.”

Reitz began the scoring 7:46 into the contest on a penalty corner from sophomore Kaitlin Barrer. The Pioneers knotted the contest a 1-1 before first-year Abigail Brox found the net on a pass from fellow first-year Lela Hull. Omar then scored twice within four minutes – both on feeds from Reitz – to put Oberlin ahead 4-1. Hull, sophomore Ashley Allen, and junior Claire Cheney also scored for the Yeowomen.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski was dominant in the nets. She turned aside five total shots, including a first-half penalty stroke. Oberlin outshot Transylvania 28-6.

The win moves the Yeowomen to 1-0 on the season. The squad takes on Centre College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
