Three Yeowomen receive all-region accolades
November 11, 2006 -- Head Coach Ray Appenheimer's Oberlin cross country teams trekked to Hanover, Indiana, this afternoon to compete in the Great Lakes Regionals. Fresh off a North Coast Athletic Conference title, the Yeowomen placed seventh out of a field of 31 teams today, while the Yeomen finished 15th out of 31 squads.
Three Yeowomen earned All-Great Lakes Region distinction by placing in the race's top 35. Sophomore Maddy Davis-Hayes led the way for Oberlin by placing 19th (23:14) out of 222 total runners in the 6K-race. Junior tri-captain Marie Barnett put forth a strong performances as well, breaking the tape in 23:33 for 25th place, while senior Barrie Newberger finished 28th with a time of 23:41. Rounding out Oberlin's top five were senior tri-captain Ariane Burwell and junior Alison Doniger, who placed 64th (24:30) and 65th (24:31), respectively.
Senior tri-captain Travis Grout just missed out on receiving all-region honors for the Yeomen, finishing in 50th place with an 8K-effort of 27:08. Fellow senior tri-captain John Shaw also had a solid race today, crossing the finish line in 27:11 for 54th place. Just a sophomore, Conor Doss also ran well, placing 83rd (27:38).
Oberlin's women were ranked nationally for the greater part of the 2006 season, but in order to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships next Saturday, teams must finish within the top five at their regional event. Davis-Hayes, who paced the Yeowomen for most of the team's races this year, missed out on going to nationals individually by just one place.
"If someone had told me three years ago that this team would win a conference title and have a chance at going to nationals, I'm not completely sure I would have believed them," Appenheimer said. "But, these women believed in themselves and believed in each other, and I'm very proud of the season they had."
Added Appenheimer, "Although we came up short in our goal of going to nationals, I really believe that this is a sign of great things to come."
