October 28, 2006 -- The Oberlin College cross country team traveled to Earlham College this afternoon to compete in the annual North Coast Athletic Conference championships. The Yeowomen, who were picked as the pre-season favorite to win the conference title, certainly did not disappoint as they cruised to a first-place finish and NCAC championship with 48 points. The title is the women's first conference crown in 22 years. The Yeomen battled to a fifth-place finish with 125 points.
Head Coach Ray Appenheimer's Yeowomen were led by junior Marie Barnett and sophomore Maddy Davis-Hayes. Barnett placed fifth with a time of 25:10 and Davis-Hayes broke the tape in 25:15, good for seventh place. Oberlin's top five did a tremendous job of packing together as senior Ariane Burwell, sophomore Flannery Cerbin and junior Alison Doniger finished 11th, 12th, and 13th, respectively. Burwell finished the race in 25:48, while Cerbin and Doniger crossed the finish line just tenths of a second apart at 25:57. Senior Barrie Newberger finished close behind, placing 17th with a time of 26:04, while first-year Piper Neihaus clocked in at 26:44 (28th place).
"The women just ran a great, tough race and really came together as a team," Appenheimer said. "I couldn't be more proud of what they have done this year."
In the men's event, senior standout Travis Grout ran a gutsy race, placing fourth overall with a time of 27:07. Classmate John Shaw place 27th (28:44) and sophomore Conor Doss finished just three seconds behind Shaw for 29th place.
Said Appenheimer, "Travis had a great race. He stuck his nose in there and tried to win it and put together a competitive and gutsy performance. I'm very happy with how he ran."
For the women's team, Barnett, Davis-Hayes, Burwell, Cerbin, Doniger, and Newberger each received All-NCAC honors for their efforts. Grout also was awarded All-NCAC accolades for his fourth-place finish. Appenheimer was named the NCAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for leading the Yeowomen to the conference crown.
After two weeks of training, the Yeomen and Yeowomen will return to competition on November 11 at the Great Lakes Regionals in Hanover, Indiana.
