October 14, 2006 -- Oberlin's cross country teams competed in their only home meet of the season this afternoon, a dual race against North Coast Athletic Conference foe Kenyon College. The Yeomen and Yeowomen swept the Lords and Ladies in a pair of 5K races at North Fields, with the men tallying 24 points and the women scoring an impressive 19 points.
The Yeomen kicked off the races this morning by placing second, third, fourth, sixth, and ninth against Kenyon. Sophomores Conor Doss and Everett Schlawin led the way for Oberlin, placing second and third, respectively. Doss finished the course, which was just slightly shorter than five kilometers, in 15:57, while Schlawin finished closely behind, breaking the tape in 15:58. Junior Dan Lesser competed the race in 16:05, good for fourth place, while classmate Andrew Higgins finished sixth with a time of 16:10. Senior Matthew Ferris-Smith also had a fine day for the Yeomen, as he placed ninth (16:15).

For the Yeowomen, who are ranked 28th in Division III, sophomore Maddy Davis-Hayes again led the way for her team by winning the race in 17:48. After Kenyon's Jessica Francois placed second, Oberlin proceeded to take the next four spots to pack together for the win. Junior Marie Barnett finished third in 18:23, sophomore Flannery Cerbin placed fourth in 18:48, junior Alison Doniger earned fifth place with a time of 18:56, and senior Barrie Newberger rounded out the Yeowomen' s top five with a sixth-place finish of 19:02.
With the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships only two weeks ago, Head Coach Ray Appenheimer was pleased with his teams' performances.
"I'm just really proud of the way we competed today," Appenheimer said. "This was an excellent way to start the championship portion of our season and I'm really impressed with how well we ran."
Both the Yeomen and Yeowomen will be away from competition for fall break, but the squads will voyage to Richmond, Indiana on October 28 to compete in the NCAC Championships. The event will be hosted by Earlham College and is slated to commence at 11:00 a.m.
