Five Oberlin women earn All-GLCA; Yeomen finish fourth
September 9, 2006 -- Sophomore Maddy Davis-Hayes continued her impressive 2006 cross country season today as she led the Oberlin College harriers to the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championship title.
Davis-Hayes clocked 19:33 over the 5000-meter course in Richmond, Indiana, good for second place overall. Senior teammate Ariane Burwell finished one step behind in third place at 19:37. Junior Marie Barnett, sophomore Flannery Cerbin, and junior Alison Doniger rounded out the scorers for Oberlin with eighth, 13th, and 14th place finishes, respectively. The Yeowomen won the team title with 40 points.
“The women beat a team [DePauw] that went to the NCAA meet last year, so we are very pleased,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. “We are very excited by where we have started the year, but we are even more excited about where we are heading this season.”
The Yeomen tallied 94 points on the morning, good for fourth place overall. Seniors Travis Grout and John Shaw led the team with top-15 finishes over the 8000-meter course. Grout hit the tape in 27:08, while Shaw finished in 27:20.
“The guys competed very, very well,” Appenheimer said. “We knocked off the second and third-ranked teams in our conference, and this performance will generate some momentum for our season.”
Both teams return to competition on September 23 at the Otterbein Invitational.
