Yeowomen finish tied for second; Yeomen place seventh

October 6, 2006 -- Oberlin's men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Delaware, Ohio this afternoon to compete in the All-Ohio Championships. Both teams boasted impressive performances at the event, with the Yeowomen finishing tied for second out of 17 teams and the Yeomen placing seventh out of 22 teams.

Tri-captain Travis Grout continued his outstanding senior season by placing third out of 141 Division III runners and 33rd out of 286 runners overall. Grout's time of 26:58 put him ahead of a number of Division I runners.

"Travis just ran a super race," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "I was really happy to see him stick his nose in there and come out with a great performance."

Four other Yeomen placed well in the Division III field, including senior John Shaw, who finished 31st with a time of 28:01. Sophomores Everett Schlawin and Conor Doss finished back-to-back (47th and 48th) with times of 28:24.1 and 28:24.4, respectively. Senior Matthew Ferris-Smith rounded out the top five for Oberlin by placing 60th (28:42).

The Yeowomen finished their race tied with Ohio Northern University for second place, tallying 99 points. Case Western Reserve University won the Division III title with 39 points. Leading the way for Oberlin was senior Ariane Burwell, who placed ninth in Division III by crossing the tape in 19:34.3. Junior Marie Barnett was only sixth tenths of a second behind Burwell, finishing in 10th place. Sophomores Maddy Davis-Hayes placed 16th and 22nd with times of 19:49 and 20:10, respectively, while junior Alison Doniger crossed the finish line in 20:48 (42nd place).

Said Appenheimer, "We finished second last year, and today we did well against the best teams in the state of Ohio."

Next Saturday, Oberlin's harriers will compete in their only home meet of the season. Kenyon College will visit Oberlin for an 11:00 a.m. race.
