Yeowomen earn fourth-place finish out of 14 teams
-- The Oberlin men's and women's cross country teams trekked to nearby Case Western Reserve University this morning to compete in the Sixth Annual Bill Sudek Classic. A number of runners put forth solid efforts for Oberlin on a wet and cold day in Cleveland, as the women placed fourth out of 14 teams and the men finished in sixth out of 12 teams.
Leading the way for the Yeowomen today was sophomore Maddy Davis-Hayes, who placed fourth overall with a time of 19:12 in the 5K race that featured over 150 harriers. Classmate Flannery Cerbin and junior Marie Barnett were the next two Oberlin runners to cross the finish line today, with Cerbin placing 18th (19:54) and Barnett finishing 22nd (20:01).
The men's squad was led by Everett Schlawin. In a field of over 160 runners, Schlawin placed 23rd with a time of 27:44. Senior captain Travis Grout also placed well in the 8K event, crossing the line in 28:00, good for 35th place.
"I'm pleased with a number of our individual performances today, " Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "Maddy ran a great, great race and Everett really stepped it up to lead the men's team."
Next up for the cross country team is the GLCA's at Earlham on September 9 (11:00 a.m.).
