-- The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) honored the top teams and individuals this week. Oberlin College made the list for both men and women.
The Yeowomen held a 3.47 gpa, while the Yeomen had a 3.26. Individually, Travis Grout and Marie Barnett made the list. Grout maintained a 3.68, while Barnett had a 3.58.
"It gives me so much pride to be associated with a group of young men and women who strive for excellence in everything they do," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "They are tremendous students, great athletes, and most importantly, outstanding human beings. The same pride they put into their class work, they put into their running and their friendships with one another. I am continually impressed and energized by what the passion these people bring to everything they do. In many ways I feel they exemplify what is so great about Oberlin College."

2005 All-Academic Cross Country Teams
November 19, 2005 -- Sophomore cross country runner Alison Donniger finished 88th out of 213 at the NCAA Championship meet on Saturday.
Doniger finished the 6000-meter course in 23:48.
"Alison had a tremendous season and to make it this far is quite an accomplishment," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "There is such a bright future for this program and for these ladies here at Oberlin."

November 12, 2005 -- Both the Oberlin men's and women's cross country teams improved on their performances from last year as the Yeomen finished 14th and the Yeowomen took sixth Saturday at the NCAA Regional Championships in Wilmington, Ohio. Alison Doniger, Marie Barnett and Travis Grout each earned All-Regional honors.
Leading the charge for the Yeowomen was sophomore Alison Doniger. Doniger finished the six mile course in eighth place with a time of 21:29. This qualified her to compete in the NCAA national championships on November 19th at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Other top finishers for Oberlin was sophomore Marie Barnett who came in 23rd and first-year Flannery Cerbin who ended the day in 41st.
“As the years go by, more and more Oberlin athletes are going to be going to the nationals,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. “The women have a great start and will be looking for a spot on next year’s national team.”
For the Yeomen, the team finished in 14th place, which is up from 20th last year. Junior Travis Grout finished in 23rd place with a time of 25:38.
“This was our goal for the entire season,” Appenheimer said. “Our team ran a tough tenacious race today, and I’m just ecstatic with the results. Everybody has done everything we have asked of them this season. Both teams showed tremendous focus, and all of their hard work has shown through today. They have earned everything that they got this year."

October 29, 2005 -- Oberlin College raced to a runner-up performance at the NCAC Women's Cross Country Championships Saturday at Denison University. The men's squad also ran well in finishing sixth and improving upon last year's point total.
The Yeowomen totaled 71 points on the strength of three top-fifteen placers. Sophomore Alison Doniger finished fifth, classmate Marie Barnett crossed in 11th, and junior Ariane Burwell placed 14th overall. Denison won the team crown with 37 points. "The best is yet to come with this group," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said.
"I'm really proud of Marie Barnett (11th overall). She ran a phenomenal race and that's a sign of where this team is headed."
The Yeomen tallied 141 points, one point away from fifth place Ohio Wesleyan University. Junior Travis Grout led the pack by finishing eighth overall, while sophomore Dan Lesser led a 30-second spread between Oberlin's second and fifth runners. Allegheny College ran away with the team title by scoring 26 points.
"Cross Country is a tough sport, and it comes down to individual places," Appenheimer said of his team's narrow miss of fifth place. "We put a sophomore and two first-years in top five, and we'll get much better with experience."
The Yeomen improved upon last year's eighth place conference finish, while the Yeowomen moved up from a fifth place finish in 2004. Both squads travel to the NCAA Regional Meet in Wilmington, Ohio, on November 12.

October 15, 2005 -- Sophomore Alison Doniger captured her second individual title of the season with a time of 18:52 at the Oberlin Fall Classic. Her finish helped bring the women to a first-place victory. For the men, junior Travis Grout finished first with a time of 16:12. The men would go on to end the day in third.
The men's squad totaled 53 points. Along with Grout’s first-place finish, Daniel Lesser finished 7th in 16:42, while Corey Squire, Conor Doss and Andrew Pike took 13th, 14th and 15th respectively. Ohio Wesleyan took the team title with 35 points.
"Our are progressing nicely," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "I'm excited to see how they finish in the next two weeks at the NCAC meet."
The Yeowomen finished first with 28 points. Right behind Doniger, was Ariane Burwell with a time of 19:04. Marie Barnett finished 5th in 19:28, while Maddy Davis-Hayes, Aileen Gallagher and Flannery Cerbin finished 8th, 10th and 13th to wrap up the scoring for Oberlin.
"This was a great race for our women," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "They are right where I’d like them to be going into the NCAC meet."

October 7, 2005 -- The Oberlin College women's cross country team finished second in the Division III section of the All-Ohio Championships on Friday afternoon. The Yeomen harriers raced to a 10th place effort.
Sophomore Alison Doniger led the Yeowomen with a third place finish. Doniger covered the 5000-meter course in 19:18. Junior Ariane Burwell captured 15th place in 19:44. Oberlin totaled 101 points, 32 points behind champion Denison University.
Travis Grout paced the Oberlin men. The junior crossed the line in seventh place with a time of 27:04 for the 8000-meter course. Otterbein College won the meet with 74 points, while the 10th place Yeomen totaled 223 points.
Oberlin hosts a triangular meet next Saturday with Kenyon College and Ohio Wesleyan University. The first race begins at 10:00 a.m.

September 24, 2005 -- The Oberlin College men's and women's cross country teams continued to excel at Saturday's Otterbein Invitational. The Yeomen finished third overall, while the Yeowomen captured first place.
The men's squad finished third out of nine teams, totaling 85 points. Travis Grout led the squad with an 11th place effort. He completed the 8000-meter course with a time of 27:11. Andrew Pike finished 18th in 27:51, while Conor Doss finished 20th in 28:06. John Shaw and Corey Squire were 23rd and 25th to round out the Yeomen scoring. Ashland took the team title with 32 points.
"Our men have come a long way," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "I'm excited to see how they progress going into the NCAC meet."
The Yeowomen finished first out of 11 teams on the 6000-meter course with 58 points. Alison Doniger led Oberlin with a second place run and a time of 22:56. Ariane Burwell placed fourth with a time of 23:01. Flannery Cerbin, Aileen Gallagher, and Marie Barnett finished 16th, 17th, and 19th to wrap up the scoring for Oberlin.
"This is a big step for the women," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "They are right on course to finish big."
Oberlin competes at the All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan on October 7.

September 10, 2005 -- The Oberlin College men’s and women’s cross country teams put on fantastic team performances at Saturday’s Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships. The Yeomen finished third overall, while the Yeowomen captured the runner-up spot.
The men’s squad, which totaled 85 points was led by a second-place performance from Travis Grout, who toured the 8000-meter course in 26:56. Dan Lesser finished sixth in 27:11, while Matt Ferris-Smith, John Shaw, and Everett Schlawin finished 21st, 27th, and 30th to round out the Yeomen scoring. Albion won the team title with 47 points.
"This was a really big improvement for our men,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. “We were eighth at the same meet last year. This is a sign of really big things to come for this program.”
The Yeowomen, second with 43 points, boasted the individual champion in Alison Doniger. The sophomore ran 19:19 over the 5000-meter course. Ariane Burwell crossed the line second in 19:25, while Maddy Davis-Hayes, Flannery Cerbin, and Marie Barnett rounded out the Oberlin scoring in 12th, 13th, and 15th places. Denison won the meet with 29 points.
“The women ran just great,” Appenheimer said. “They executed the race plan perfectly and were tough the last half. This is just the beginning of a great season for our women.”
Oberlin competes next at the Otterbein Invitational on September 24.

September 2, 2005 -- Oberlin's cross country teams kicked off the 2005 season at the Denison Classic meet in Granville, Ohio. Though the meet went unscored, several impressive performances set the tone for the men's and women's teams.
The Yeomen were paced by a second-place effort from junior Matt Ferris-Smith in the men's two-mile race. Ferris-Smith covered the course in 10:37, followed by first-year teammates Connor Doss (10:54) and Corey Squire (11:00). Junior Travis Grout led the Oberlin men in the 5000-meter contest, finishing sixth in 16:49.
The women's squad finished an impressive 3-4-5 in the two-mile event. First-year Flannery Cerbin toured the terrain in 12:39, followed by junior Ariane Burwell (12:43) and sophomore Marie Barnett (12:48). The 5000-meter event also went well for the Yeowomen. First-year Aileen Gallagher crossed the line third (20:11), followed by first-year Maddy Davis-Hayes in fifth (20:25) and Alison Doniger in seventh (20:36).
"What a difference a year makes," Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. "We had a number of athletes who were diligent with their summer training. The best part of our effort today is that even though we ran well, we will be much, much better two months from now."
The squads return to action next Saturday in the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships at Albion College.
