Verne’s Words: Inside the 2008 Spring Break Trip to Phoenix for the Oberlin College Baseball Team

March 25 – Brian Verne’s go-ahead single in the top of the 10th inning propelled the Oberlin College baseball team past Elmhurst College 10-9 in extra innings on Tuesday night.
The Yeomen (4-7) held a 9-4 advantage late in the game, but the Bluejays didn’t go away quietly as they tied the game at nine in the 9th inning – setting the stage for Verne’s heroics.
Since Oberlin was the designating visiting team, work still needed to be done in the bottom of the 10th frame, and sophomore southpaw Jack Dunn was happy to do so as he closed the door on the Bluejays to garner his second win of the trip.
Dunn, the reining NCAC Pitcher of the Week, worked the ninth and 10th – striking out three batters over the two innings.
Oberlin got another solid start from P.J. Carter as he worked seven innings – scattering 10 hits, walking one, racking up four Ks and allowing just three runs along the way.
Verne finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Ben Puterbaugh and Jeremy Simon also combined for six hits and three RBIs. Sophomore Zach Berman added two hits and a run scored for the Yeomen.
Although the Yeomen ended the day in grand fashion, it didn’t start that way as they lost their first game of the day to Middlebury College 17-5.
The OC offense did have some bright spots however as Ben Master, Ryan Mouch, Wayne Mundekis and Carter all had two hits in the game.
Oberlin is now 4-3 on its current west coast swing. OC will look to improve on that mark tomorrow against the University of Chicago. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. MST (9:30 P.M. EST).
