Verne’s Words: Inside the 2008 Spring Break Trip to Phoenix for the Oberlin College Baseball Team (Updated 3/24/08 at 2:04 p.m. EST)

March 23 – The Oberlin College baseball team started their 2008 spring break trip grand fashion by sweeping a doubleheader (9-2, 16-7) from Lawrence College on Saturday night.

In game one, the Yeomen (2-4) rode the left arm of sophomore pitcher Jack Dunn (1-2) as he struck out career-high 13 batters - scattering just four hits and allowing one run over six innings of work.

Making his collegiate debut, first-year Shane Hisner had a solid day at the plate as he belted out five hits, including a double and triple in game one. Junior outfielder, Brian Verne also provided some offense for the Yeomen with two hits, including a triple and had two runs scored.

In game two, the OC offense put together their best effort of the season thus far. Hisner continued to show why he could be one of the best first-year players in the NCAC this season as he added three more hits, including another three-bagger to go along with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Tri-Captain, Jeremy Simon also added three hits, two RBIs and scored three times in the nightcap.

First-years Ben Puterbaugh and Brandon Cantrill also combined for four hits, five RBIs and three runs scored.

Sophomore Zach Berman also added two hits, including a double to go along with two RBIs, and two runs.

First-year southpaw Grady Campion is quickly becoming head coach Eric Lahetta’s top option out of the bullpen as he earned his first collegiate win in relief by throwing 4.1 innings, fanning four hitters, while surrendering just two hits and one unearned run along the way.

Oberlin will be back in action this afternoon with a doubleheader against Knox College. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. MST (3 p.m. EST).

Note: Box Scores will be posted as soon as they become available.
