Game One Box l Game Two
April 27 – First-year Pat Bourke came through with the biggest hit of his young collegiate career with a two-out run-scoring single down the left field line to propel the Oberlin College baseball team to a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win over Kenyon in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Tri-captain Jeremy Simon got the inning started with a single through the right side and later moved into scoring position by stealing second base. Bourke then came to the plate and fell behind in the count 1-2, before belting the game-winning shot down the line – giving Oberlin its 10th win of the season and salvaging a series split with the Lords.
The Yeomen (10-24, 5-11 NCAC East) matched a season-high with 16 hits in the game. Ben Master, Brian Verne and Jeremy Simon joined Bourke with three hits in the contest. The foursome also accounted for all six runs in the game as Simon led the way with three runs scored.
Oberlin was able to stay within striking distance throughout the game due the excellent pitching performance from southpaw Grady Campion as he went six-plus innings, scattering six hits, striking out four and walking none through his 79 pitches of work. Kenyon did score five runs with Campion on the bump but just two were earned as the Yeomen made three errors in the game.
Jack Dunn got the win in relief – throwing just four pitchers – registering two fly outs and a pickoff.
Kenyon took a 2-0 lead in the second, but Oberlin quickly cut that lead in half with a run of its own on an RBI double by Brandon Cantrill. Both teams posted a pair in the third and added single tallies in the fourth to make it a 5-4 Kenyon advantage going into the fifth.
Bourke was not only the hero in the end as he also came through big in the fifth with an RBI single to right field to score Simon and tie the game at five.
After retiring three straight Kenyon hitters in the top of the fifth, Campion mowed through the Lords lineup in the sixth with another 1-2-3 effort to keep Oberlin right in position for the last-inning heroics.
In game one, the Lords got the best of the Yeomen with an 11-3 victory. Keyon scored five times through the first three innings and used a solid pitching performance from Dan White to garner the win.
Shane Hisner and Simon each had two hits in the game for the Yeomen.
Oberlin will have a quick turnaround as it will play host to John Carroll University in a single nine inning non-conference tilt on Tuesday at Dill Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
