Game One Box l Game Two Box
April 8 – Just two days after knocking off the No. 2 ranked Wooster Scots, the Oberlin College baseball team came out flat on Tuesday night as Grove City took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader, 15-1 and 9-2, on Tuesday night at the Pipeyard in Lorain, Ohio.
“This was a disappointing result for us tonight,” head coach Eric Lahetta said. “We just need to put it behind us and get ready for Kenyon this weekend.”
OC (6-15) had their chances in game two to have a different outcome, but couldn’t find that timely hit when it needed it - stranding a pair of runners in each of the first two innings and leaving a total of eight men on the base paths in the game.
Left-hander Grady Campion (1-3) got the start on the mound and was cruising along until the Wolverines manufactured their first run in the fourth after a leadoff walk came around score and also added another run off of an Oberlin error. Grove City (6-7) added two more in the fifth with two-outs as Scott Moran doubled to right center and his brother Brian Moran followed with a triple of his own to the right-center gap.
The Yeomen responded by cutting the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Ben Puterbaugh, but he was later cut down trying to steal second, which put an end to the threat.
Oberlin once again threatened in the sixth, but after Jeremy Simon led off the inning by getting hit with a pitch, Phil Brua grounded into a pitcher’s best friend 6-4-3 double play to put a damper on the potential rally. Brandon Cantrill and Nick Monroe followed with back-to-back singles, but Zach Berman’s drive to deep center was flagged down to end the inning.
The Wolverines then added five runs in the top of the seventh to put things out of reach for good.
In game one, the Yeomen fell behind early and could never dig themselves out of the hole as the Wolverines posted crooked numbers in four of the first five innings and never looked back.
Oberlin starting pitcher P.J. Carter (1-3) lasted just 1.2 innings as he was touched up for six hits and seven runs, four of which were earned.
Oberlin will look to bounce back when they host Kenyon College on Saturday and Sunday in an NCAC series. Both days will feature two seven-inning games with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
