Verne’s Words: Inside the 2008 Spring Break Trip to Phoenix for the Oberlin College Baseball Team
March 27 – One night after pulling some late-inning heroics of their own, the Oberlin College baseball team had the tables turned on them as the University of Chicago plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Yeomen, 9-7, in late action Wednesday night.
Oberlin fell behind 4-0 in the game’s early going, but battled back to claim the lead, only to see it slip away in the end. OC had a lot of missed opportunities in the game – stranding 13 runners on base – leaving the bases loaded in the first and eighth innings.
P.J. Carter took the loss in relief of starter Jack Dunn. The 6-foot-3 right-hander tossed two innings – giving up three hits and two earned runs. Dunn went six- plus innings – allowing eight hits, five walks, and seven runs along the way.
Offensively, OC (4-8) was led by first-year Bandon Cantrill as he went 2-for-2 with an RBI, three walks and scored twice. Fellow rookies, Ben Puterbaugh and Ryan Mouch combined for four hits and three RBIs.
Sophomore catcher Wayne Mundekis went 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored.
Oberlin will complete its west coast swing later today against Castleton State College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. MST (6 p.m. EST).
Note: Box Scores will be posted as soon as they become available.
