Hisner Guides the Yeomen to a Game-One Win Over Case

Game One Box l Game Two Box

April 16 –
In pair of seesaw games on Wednesday night at the Pipeyard, the Oberlin College baseball team took game one, 6-5, against Case Western Reserve, but had the score reversed in game two, falling 6-5 in eight innings.

In game one, Oberlin (8-17) spotted the Spartans five runs as Case posted three runs in the first, and one run in both the second and fourth innings. However, the Oberlin offense finally came to life with four runs in the fifth inning and scored to two more in the sixth to take the lead for good.

First-year Shane Hisner got the Yeomen on the board in the fourth with an RBI single and followed with a clutch two-run double in the sixth to put Oberlin on top. Hisner led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate to go along with three RBI.

Fellow first-year’s Brandon Cantrill and Phil Brua also had two hits in the game each.

For the second time in as many days, P.J. Carter earned a win in relief. Starter Grady Campion went five innings – recoding five strikeouts along the way.

OC fell behind early in game two as well as the Spartans scored two runs in the second. However, Oberlin responded with a three-run third, but Case would not go away quietly as they posted three runs of their own in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

The Yeomen kept fighting till the end as junior Brian Verne came through with a two-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh to get OC within one and keeping the inning alive to allow Henry Bloomfield to score on a passed ball to send the game to extra fames.

Unfortunately, the Spartans scored in the top of the eighth and the Yeomen bats were out of magic in the home-half of the inning to allow CWR to escape with a split.

Oberlin will travel to Allegheny this weekend for a critical NCAC series. First pitch for Saturday and Sunday’ s doubleheaders will be at 1 p.m.
