Game One Box l Game Two Box
April 20 – The weekend road trip to Meadville, Pa. couldn’t have turned out much worse for the Oberlin College baseball team as the Allegheny College Gators completed the four-game sweep of the Yeomen by winning 6-4 and 8-5 on Sunday afternoon.
In both games the Yeomen held early leads, but in each instance they could not hold on for a victory.
After struggling at the plate yesterday, the Yeomen came out swinging in game one as they blasted 10 hits in the contest. OC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first an RBI groundout by Jeremy Simon.
The Gators’ knotted things up at one in the third, but Oberlin reclaimed the lead in the fifth as Brian Verne scored on infield hit by Simon. The Yeomen were threatening to add more in the frame, but Wayne Mundekis grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to extinguish the potential Oberlin rally.
The Allegheny (14-14, 7-7 NCAC) offense touched up Oberlin starter Brandon Cantrill for three runs in the bottom of the fifth and added two more in the sixth off of reliever P.J. Carter to make it a 6-2 game heading into the seventh.
Oberlin’s (8-21, 3-9 NCAC) never say die attitude shined through in their final at-bat – rallying for two runs as Ben Kauder singled to left to plate Verne and later scoring himself on an Allegheny error.
Verne, Kaduer and Simon each had two hits in the game and accounted for all four OC runs.
Game two started much like game one as the Yeomen grabbed an early 1-0 advantage, but their offense disappeared through the middle portion of the game to allow the Gators to battle back.
After getting two complete-game efforts on Saturday, the Gators got another outstanding start in the series finale from John Hess as went six innings, striking out seven, scattering six hits, while surrendering just two earned runs along the way.
The Gators scored all eight runs from the second through the fifth innings to build an 8-1 lead.
OC tried to rally with four runs in the seventh, using four hits and taking advantage of two Gators’ errors, but it was too little to late for the Yeomen to steal away the win.
Oberlin will return to the diamond on Thursday, April 24, in a nine inning non-conference tilt at Baldwin-Wallace College. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
