April 10, 2007 -- The Oberlin baseball team picked up its 10th win of the 2007 season today by downing Myers University, 7-6, in non-conference action at Dill Field. Led by home runs from seniors Jesse Cullen-Dupont and Rick Betzel, the Yeomen improved to 10-14 on the year, while the Mustangs slipped to 4-16.
Oberlin starter Jaremy Rich threw six
solid innings today, giving up just seven hits and
one earned run, but he did not earn a decision. Leading
6-3 in the top of the ninth, Myers's Karl Ferber spoiled
first-year pitcher Jack Dunn's save opportunity with
a three run shot to knot the score at 6-6 heading into
the bottom of the ninth.
Rick Betzel wasted little time giving
Oberlin the win in the ninth, though, as he led
off the inning with a solo blast to left-center field.
Dunn pitched two innings in relief to pick up the win,
improving to 4-3 on the year.
Cullen-Dupont finished the game 2-3 with a home run, three RBI's, a run scored, and a stolen base. First-year Max Phinney also had a strong game, going 2-3 with a run scored and a pair of stolen bases. Cullen-Dupont and Betzel both have two dingers on the year, while Betzel leads the team with 20 runs batted in.
Myers was led in defeat by Ferber, who went 3-5 with a double, home run, and three runs batted in.
Oberlin's next scheduled contest is on April 12 for a non-conference nine-inning game at Grove City College (3:30 p.m.).
