Oberlin Baseball Team Completes Sweep of Hiram With Pair of North Coast Athletic Conference Victories, 15-13 and 3-1

April 2, 2007 -- Late game heroics and record-breaking victories were the theme of today's thrilling 15-13 and 3-1 wins over visiting Hiram College. After sweeping the Terriers, Oberlin's record stands at 9-10 overall and 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Hiram slipped to 2-17 and 1-5 in league play. The Yeomen's 4-0 mark in league play is the team's best-ever start in the NCAC.

First-year Jack Dunn was without a doubt the hero for the Yeomen today, as he hit a walk-off two-run home run to give his team the 15-13 victory in the opener. He also pitched his third complete game of the season and earned his third win on the mound in the nightcap, as the Yeomen were victorious 3-1.

In the first game, Oberlin trailed 7-13 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. However, a grand-slam by sophomore P.J. Carter and Dunn's walk-off homer were enough to complete the incredible eight-run comeback inning. Sophomore Jeremy Simon earned the win in relief, throwing 0.2 scoreless innings. Carter started from the mound and threw 6.1 innings while yielding five earned runs and compiling five strikeouts. Other hitting stars for Oberlin in the first game included seniors Jesse Cullen-Dupont and Seth Binder and sophomore infielder Cal Kyrkostas. Cullen-Dupont went 2-4, while Binder went 2-2 with three runs batted in and a pair of stolen bases. Kyrkostas finished the game 2-3 with two runs scored, while sophomore center fielder Brian Verne went 2-5 with two run scored and a stolen base. Senior Rick Betzel also was powerful from the plate, hitting a clutch three-run home run in the sixth inning.

Dunn was dominant from the mound in the second game. In seven innings of work, he gave up just two hits, one unearned run, and one walk, while managing to strike out six Hiram hitters. Simon led Oberlin offensively in the contest, going a perfect 3-3 with two runs batted in.

Dunn was also named the NCAC's Pitcher of the Week (.pdf) this afternoon after earning two wins and a save over the Yeomen's spring break trip last week.

Oberlin will take its undefeated NCAC record to Wooster for an Easter weekend four-game series. On Friday, the two teams will square off for a twinbill at 1:00 p.m., while the Yeomen and Fighting Scots will return to action on Saturday again at 1:00 p.m.
