Yeomen Topple Hiram in North Coast Athletic Conference Opener

March 31, 2007 -- The Oberlin baseball team began its North Coast Athletic Conference season with a bang today by defeating visiting Hiram College in a twinbill at Dill Field, 5-4 and 5-4. With the pair of wins, the Yeomen improved to 7-10 on the year, while the Terriers slipped to 2-17.

In game one, Oberlin trailed 2-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning; however, the Yeomen rallied for three runs in the finale to come away with the 5-4 victory. In the seventh, senior Seth Binder tied the game at 4-4 with a two-out two RBI single, while classmate Jesse Cullen-Dupont hit the game-winning single to plate sophomore Cal Kyrkostas. Senior Jaremy Rich went the distance on the mound for the Yeomen, giving up just six hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters. Sophomore P.J. Carter belted a home run while going 2-3 in the contest.

The Yeomen won in game two again by the score of 5-4. Cullen-Dupont paced the offense with a 2-3 effort, while Binder also went 2-3 and sophomore outfielder Brian Verne scored two runs from the leadoff spot. Sophomore Eric Gibbs picked up the win on the mound, going five innings and giving up four runs. First-year Jack Dunn pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the save.

Oberlin will return to the diamond tomorrow to close out the season series with the Terriers. The games at Dill Field are slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
