Oberlin Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with Kenyon College, 8-4 and 2-5

April 17, 2007 -- In a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with important playoff implications, the Oberlin baseball team split a twinbill today at Kenyon this afternoon, 2-5 and 8-4. After several snow and rain outs, the weather gods finally allowed for a great day to play baseball in Gambier, as the Yeomen's record now stands at 11-15 overall and 5-5 in league play, while the Lords sit at 13-10 overall and 2-5 in the NCAC.

The opening game in today's doubleheader featured a pair of strong individual hitting performances and a solid pitching effort from first-year Jack Dunn. Despite striking out nine batters and throwing his fifth complete game of the season, Dunn took the loss to fall to 4-4 on the year. Senior shortstop Seth Binder and sophomore first baseman Jeremy Simon both went a perfect 3-3 in the game, while senior catcher Rick Betzel went 1-3 and drove in both of Oberlin's runs. Kenyon was paced by Hugh Guill's three runs batted in.

In the nightcap, Oberlin bounced back by roping 11 hits to out-score the hosts, 8-4. Betzel went 3-3 in the game with a pair of doubles and two RBI's, while outfielders Brian Verne and Zach Berman both collected two hits. Binder was 1-2 to improve his season batting average to .375.

Senior Jaremy Rich put in a yeoman effort on the mound, going the distance while scattering 11 hits for two earned runs. Kenyon outfielder Chad Rothschild paced the Lords by going 3-4 with a stolen base and run scored.

Oberlin will host Allegheny College (5-15, 2-4 NCAC) this weekend for a pivotal divisional four-game series. The Yeomen have just six conference games remaining on their slate.

With a number of games still left on their 2007 schedule, the Yeomen achieved a significant milestone today by stealing their 67th base of the year. This ties the team single season record set in 1988.
