June 28, 2007 -- Oberlin Head Baseball Coach Eric Lahetta has announced that juniors P.J. Carter, Jeremy Simon, and Brian Verne will serve as tri-captains for the 2008 baseball team. The baseball coaching staff selected the trio based upon the work ethic, loyalty, and dedication these three student-athletes have demonstrated to the baseball program.
Carter (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral King) is a two-starter at third base and pitcher. He finished the 2007 season with a .261 batting average, with five home runs, 17 runs batted in and five stolen bases. In addition, he pitched 45.2 innings, registering a tough-luck 1-5 won-loss record, with two saves. Carter finished with three complete games and 31 strikeouts.
Simon (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O’Dowd) came on strong for the Yeomen in 2007. He was a part-timer as a first-year and this year was a North Coast Athletic Conference honorable mention selection this past season. Simon made 37 starts in 38 games last season. He ended up batting .327 with 35 hits and 19 runs batted in. Simon played a Gold Glove caliber first base, as he did not make an error in his 248 chances in 2007. In addition, Simon appeared in six games as a relief pitcher compiling a 3-0 won-loss record.
Verne (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) is a two-year starter for the Yeomen. He played much of the 2007 season with a bad knee and foot, but refused to miss a game. He batted .250 last season, with 27 hits, including 16 runs scored, and 12 stolen bases. He appeared in 38 games with 35 starts and made only two errors in the outfield.
"It wasn’t easy, but I believe we made the right choices," Lahetta said. "We chose some great leaders, quality baseball players, and most importantly, people with character."
