March 4, 2007 -- After
downing Pikeville yesterday in its season opener, the
Oberlin baseball team looked to keep it winning ways
alive today in the Mountaineer Classic. Host Berea
College (Ky.) edged the Yeomen in two non-conference
games, though, 1-0 and 7-5. With the loss, Oberlin's
record now stands at 1-2 overall.
After six scoreless innings in game one of the twinbill, Berea picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory. In his first career start for the Yeomen, Jack Dunn went 6.2 innings, yielding just one run and walk while racking up 12 strikeouts.
Despite a pair of two-hit performances by senior Jessie Cullen-Dupont and first-year Max Phinney (Oberlin, Ohio/Oberlin), Oberlin lost the nightcap to Berea, 5-7. Cullen-Dupont added a pair of runs scored and a walk to his 2-3 day. Sophomore P.J. Carter (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral King) put forth a strong effort on the mound in defeat, going 5.1 innings and giving up four earned runs.
Oberlin will return to non-conference action on March 17-18 when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn. for a pair of doubleheaders in Maryville College's Foothills Classic. The Yeomen will face Centennial Conference power Franklin and Marshall College (Pa.) on March 17 then square off against host Maryville the following day.
