March 17, 2007 -- The Oberlin baseball team traveled to Maryville, Tenn., this afternoon to face Franklin and Marshall College (Pa.) in day one of the
Foothills Classic. The Diplomats were able to best the Yeomen in a pair of non-conference games, 7-3 and 8-5. Oberlin's record dropped to 1-4 with the losses, while F&M improved to 6-7.
In game one, Franklin and Marshall's Brad Andres was able to go the distance to earn the win on the mound, but the Yeomen were able to muster up five hits on offense. Senior outfielder Jesse Cullen-Dupont led the way by racking up a home run, double, and three runs scored. Sophomore
Cal Kyrkostas also had a 2-3 day, with two runs batted in and a double. Senior Jaremy Rich put in five innings of work on the mound for Oberlin, yielding seven hits and six earned runs.
Two-hit performances from seniors Seth Binder and Rick Betzel weren't quite enough to lift Head Coach Eric Lahetta's Yeomen past the Dips in game two. Junior
Alex Sugiura put in 5.1 innings of work, giving up eight hits and six earned runs. Binder and Betzel both had doubles, while Binder scored two runs and drew a walk.
Oberlin will return to action tomorrow afternoon when it faces host Maryville College for a 12:00 p.m. twinbill.
