Tomcats Take Two from Yeomen

April 30, 2006 -- The Oberlin College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Thiel College on Sunday afternoon by scores of 5-1 and 6-2 in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

In the first game, down two runs in the top of third, the Yeomen began to rally. Junior Jesse Cullen-Dupont smacked a two out delivery into left field for a double, driving home fellow junior Seth Binder and advancing senior Joe Sheehan to third base. Oberlin would leave Sheehan and Cullen-Dupont stranded to end the inning and conclude the team’s scoring.

First-year P.J. Carter took the loss pitching three innings and striking out one with sophomore Joe Reisz pitching three shutout innings and also striking out one Tomcat. Cullen-Dupont led the offense with a 2-3 performance and the team’s lone RBI.

In game number two, the Yeomen found themselves fighting from behind once again as the team trailed by five runs entering the fourth inning. After a series of Tomcat miscues, Cullen-Dupont reached third, senior Landon Lerner arrived safely to second and first-year Cal Kyrkostas stood at the plate. With two outs, Kyrkostas singled through the right side of the Thiel defense pushing both Oberlin runners across the plate. The Yeomen would leave Kyrkostas on base to end the inning and would not score again.

Junior Jaremy Rich went the distance for Oberlin taking the loss despite a pair of strikeouts. Binder and Lerner both recorded two hits for the game and Kyrkostas logged the only two RBI for the Yeomen.

The team will take the field for the last time this season on Friday, May 5th at Lake Erie College. The first pitch of the double-header is set for 3:00 p.m.

Yeomen Drop a Pair to Kenyon

April 23, 2006 -- The Oberlin College baseball team fell twice against NCAC foe Kenyon College 3-1 and 8-4.

In game one Kenyon jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning due to several Oberlin defensive miscues. Blaise Milburn keyed the attack with one RBI and run scored in the inning. Oberlin came charging back in their half of the first inning, scoring one run on back-to-back doubles by junior Seth Binder and senior Chad Kutting. For the Yeomen, junior pitcher Jaremy Rich did not allow a run after the first inning, scattering eight hits over seven innings, and shut down the Kenyon hitters. However, the Yeomen were unable to add any more offense as Kenyon won by the final score of 3-1.

In game two, Kenyon again scored in the first inning. The Yeomen struck back in the bottom of the first after a pair of singles and stolen bases by Binder and Kutting put runners on second and third with one out. Junior Jesse Cullen-Dupont knocked in Binder to tie the game at one. The Yeomen’s defense betrayed them again in the top of the second as Kenyon was able to score four more runs off of senior pitcher Steve Solomon. The Yeomen struck back in the bottom of the third scoring three runs of their own. Cullen-Dupont and first-year Calvin Kyrkostas both had doubles to drive in runs and junior Rick Betzel had a sac file to account for the third run. Solomon pitched well for the Yeomen, setting a career high with eight strikeouts in five innings, but the game was called due to rain in the 6th inning, preventing any chance of a Yeomen comeback and giving the Lords the 8-4 victory.

The losses drop the Yeomen to 9-23 on the season. The Yeomen look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host Baldwin-Wallace in a non-conference game.

The Yeomen answered in the bottom of the first with a three run homer by junior Rick Betzel. Betzel finished the day 3 for 3 with two homeruns, a single, and five RBI’s. Yeomen Unable to Rally After Rain Delay

April 12, 2006 -- The Yeomen baseball squad was unable to rally after an hour long rain delay, falling to Case Western Reserve 4-3.

The Yeomen were down early as the Spartans scored two runs off starter Jaremy Rich . In the home half of the inning, the Yeomen responded with two runs of their own. After Case tied the game at three a piece in the top of the fifth and took the lead by one in the top of the seventh the rain clouds rolled in. The game was delayed for just under an hour due to lightning and heavy rains in the area. When play resumed senior Steve Solomon toed the rubber with one out and runners on first and third. The one run Spartan lead proved insurmountable as the Yeomen only got two runners on base in the last three innings.

March 27, 2006 -- The Yeomen baseball team continues to struggle down south. Oberlin faced Colby College in a non-conference doubleheader in Ft. Myers, Florida. It was a tight game through the fourth inning as Oberlin first-year P.J. Carter held Colby to just three hits in his first four innings.
