March 25-April 1 -- Seeking warm weather and strong non-conference competition, Oberlin's spring sports teams will trek to Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, and Arizona for their annual spring break trips this coming week, March 25 through April 1. March 29, 2007
The Oberlin baseball team closed out its 2007 spring break this afternoon by facing Thomas College for a non-conference doubleheader. The Yeomen were defeated in both games, 4-12 and 1-16, to fall to 5-10 overall on the year.

In game one, the hitting stars for Oberlin were seniors Seth Binder and Rick Betzel and sophomore Jeremy Simon. Binder and Betzel both went 2-4, while Simon put together a 3-4 day with a double. During the nightcap, three different Yeomen had hits.

Oberlin will return home on Saturday to kick off its North Coast Athletic Conference and home schedule by hosting Hiram College for a 1:00 p.m. twinbill.

March 28, 2007
The Yeomen had an excellent day this afternoon in Phoenix, Ariz., sweeping non-conference foe Middlebury College, 7-1 and 7-6. With the pair of victories, Oberlin improved its record to 5-8 overall.

In game one of the twinbill, the Yeomen received yet another great outing from first-year southpaw Jack Dunn. Dunn threw a complete game, going seven strong innings while only giving up five hits and one run. Sophomore outfielder Brian Verne stayed red hot offensively, going 2-4 with a pair of run scored (he also boasted a 2-4 effort with a double and two stolen bases in the nightcap). Also having multi-hit games for Head Coach Eric Lahetta were senior Seth Binder, sophomore Cal Kyrkostas, and first-year Max Phinney. Jeremy Simon had the big hit for the Yeomen in the win, stroking a two-run single in the third inning that put his team up 4-1. The sophomore also earned the win on the mound.

Sophomore P.J. Carter proved to be the hero in the nightcap, belting a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh that measured at least 400 feet. The homer came on the first pitch of Carter's at-bat and scored junior Alex Sugiura, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner for senior Rick Betzel. Betzel and Simon both had two-hit games, while Kyrkostas swiped four stolen bases and scored two runs.

The Yeomen have two games remaining in Phoenix. They will close out their spring break trip tomorrow by squaring off against Thomas College in a doubleheader slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.

March 26, 2007
For the second straight day in Phoenix, the Oberlin baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader. The Yeomen squared off against MIT today, winning the first game 8-2 and dropping the second in eight innings, 5-7.

Senior pitcher Jaremy Rich had an impressive outing on the mound in the opener, going all seven innings and giving up only four hits and two runs while tallying four strikeouts. Sophomore Brian Verne had a three-hit day from the plate and first-year Max Phinney went 2-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Senior Jesse Cullen-Dupont continued to stay hot from the plate, going 2-3 with a run scored, while sophomore P.J. Carter belted a fifth-inning triple that scored two and broke the game open.

Verne again paced the offense in the second game with two hits, a double, run scored, and RBI, but the Yeomen fell in eight innings by a pair of runs. Senior captain Seth Binder put together a 2-5 game, including a run, RBI, and stolen base, and classmate Rick Betzel added two hits, a run scored, and RBI. Phinney earned the loss on the mound in relief, but did only give up one run in 3.1 innings of work.

The Yeomen (3-8) will have tomorrow off from competition then they will face Middlebury College in a doubleheader on March 28 (12:00 p.m.).

The Yeomen kicked off the Greater Phoenix Invitational this afternoon in excellent fashion by downing Colby College in the first game of a doubleheader, 6-1. Oberlin was edged in the nightcap, 7-8.

First-year pitcher Jack Dunn picked up his first collegiate win in the opener by throwing all seven innings and yielding just two hits and one earned run. The southpaw managed to just walk two batters while striking out 10 in the compete game victory. Offensively, sophomore slugger P.J. Carter led the way by belting a home run, scoring two runs, and drawing a pair of walks. Senior Jesse Cullen-Dupont put the icing on the cake for the Yeomen in the fifth inning by slapping a two-run single. Sophomore outfielder Brian Verne also had a stellar game for the Yeomen, going 2-3 with a pair of stolen bases.

In the nightcap, Cullen-Dupont and sophomore Cal Kyrkostas paced Oberlin with three-hit performances. Cullen-Dupont had two doubles and three runs scored, while he and Kyrkostas both swiped a pair of steals. Sophomore Eric Gibbs was solid on the mound in two innings of relief, throwing two hitless innings to go along with two strikeouts.

Oberlin (2-7) will return to action tomorrow by squaring off against MIT in a doubleheader slated to begin at noon.

March 30, 2007
The Yeowomen (1-9 overall) finished their spring break trip in Ft. Myers, Fla. today with a pair of non-conference losses to Colby, 5-14, and SUNY-Potsdam, 3-8.

Leading Oberlin offensively against Colby were first-years Sophie Schacht and Lauren Luther and sophomore Leah Pine. Schacht and Luther both went 2-3 on the day, while Pine went 1-3 with a blast of a home run.

In the nightcap against SUNY-Potsdam, the Yeowomen were paced by Nora Granahan. The hot-hitting first-year finished the game 2-4. Sophomore Sophie Simon-Ortiz and first-year Julia Chauvin also both belted home runs in the contest.

Oberlin will return from sunny Florida to host Allegheny College on April 3 (3:30 p.m. doubleheader) for the team's NCAC and home-opener at Mary Culhane Field.

The Oberlin softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games this afternoon during spring break action in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Yeowomen lost the first game of the day to Wisconsin-Whitewater, 0-12. Oberlin fell in the nightcap to Colby, 1-8.

First-year infielder Nora Granahan continued to stay hot from the plate today, going 4-5 on the day. Sophomore Sophie Simon-Ortiz had a strong second game with a 2-3 effort.

The Yeowomen (1-7) will conclude this year's spring break trip tomorrow by facing Colby again 9:00 a.m. and SUNY-Potsdam at 1:00 p.m. Oberlin fell to SUNY-Potsdam on March 25, 7-9.

March 27, 2007
Head Coach Adrienne Davis's Yeowomen completed their third day of competition in Ft. Myers, Fla. this afternoon. In a morning game against Union, Oberlin was held scoreless, falling 0-12. First-year Julia Chauvin led Oberlin at the plate by going 1-2.

Oberlin's afternoon contest also ended in defeat, despite a number of solid individual offensive performances. The Yeowomen were bested by Middlebury 2-14, but two Yeowomen put together multi-hit games. First-year Lauren Luther paced the team by going 2-3, while classmate Sophie Schacht went 2-3 with a walk. First-year Nora Granahan also drove in both of the team's runs on a triple.

After a day off in the sun tomorrow, the Yeowomen (1-5) will play four more games in Florida. Their next contest is against Wisconsin-Whitewater on March 29 at 11:00 a.m.

March 26, 2007
The Oberlin softball team picked up its first win of the 2007 season today by downing MIT, 9-4. Earlier in the day, the Yeowomen were defeated by Southern Maine, 1-11.

Against MIT, first-year outfielder Sophie Schacht led the way by going 3-3 with a walk and a catcher's interference. Junior Spencer McCaffrey also went 1-1 with a pair of walks in the non-conference win. Sophomore Michelle Zanni threw a strong game en route to claiming her first win of the year, throwing all seven innings while giving up just one earned run and striking out four.

In the second game against Southern Maine, sophomore Ruth Allanbrook paced the offense by going 1-2 with a double and run batted in. First-year Nora Granahan also had a 1-2 day from the plate.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Yeowomen (1-3) will face Union at 9:00 a.m. and Middlebury at 11:00 a.m.

Despite a pair of non-conference losses, the Oberlin softball team had plenty to be positive about after today's contests. The Yeowomen lost 0-8 to DePauw in the first game of the day, but bounced back to put up a strong fight against SUNY-Potsdam, falling 7-9.

Sophomore Ruth Allanbrook, junior Spencer McCaffrey, and first-year Nora Granahan led Oberlin offensively in the two-run loss to SUNY-Potsdam. Allanbrook drew a walk, recorded a sacrifice fly, and scored once, while McCaffrey went 2-4 from the plate with a double and two runs batted in. Granahan also crossed home plate twice for the Yeowomen.

"Some really great things happened and it was very promising for our first time out on the field this season," Head Coach Adrienne Davis said. "Our defense also played especially well at times today."

Davis and the Yeowomen (0-2) return to competition tomorrow by facing Southern Maine at 1:00 p.m. and MIT at 3:00 p.m.

Head Coach Kevin Walz's men's lacrosse team played the first of its two spring games this afternoon at Guilford College. The Yeomen played the host Quakers evenly after the first quarter, but a quick 1-4 deficit was too much for Oberlin to overcome in the non-conference contest, as Guilford came out on top, 8-5.

Senior quad-captain Bryan Harfenist led Oberlin with a pair of goals and and assist. Also scoring goals for the Yeomen were first-year Erik Strand, Alex Jacobs, and Nick Sherman. Junior goalkeeper Drew Zambelli played all 60 minutes today in the high North Carolina temperatures, and held the Quakers scoreless in the fourth quarter while compiling 12 saves for the game.

March 30, 2007
The Yeowomen concluded a highly successful spring break trip to Dallas, Texas, by winning their fourth straight contest. Oberlin bested host Dallas, 13-5, to improve to 4-1 overall.

The game was limited to just 48 minutes of action due to severe weather (the NCAA minimum for an official contest), but the Yeowomen were still able to light up the scoreboard with nine-first half goals. Oberlin held a four-goal advantage at the intermission and held the hosts scoreless in the 18-minute second period.

Leading Oberlin today was sophomore Dana Rich. The midfielder racked up a game-high five goals and two assists. Also boasting multiple-goal games were sophomore Lela Hull, junior Elizabeth Gula, and first-year Scarlett Prati. The Yeowomen out-shot Dallas 39-14 and won the draw control advantage 14-6.

Oberlin will next play in its home opener on April 5 (4:30 p.m.) against non-conference opponent SUNY-Fredonia.

Oberlin claimed its third straight dominating victory this evening by routing Pacific University in spring break action at the University of Dallas. The Yeowomen won 18-4, improving to 3-1 overall on the young season. Oberlin actually trailed 2-3 early in the game, but fought back quickly to take a 6-4 lead and never looked back.

Sophomore attacked Lela Hull continued to rack up the points this year, scoring a team-high tying four goals and dishing out five assists. Junior Kaitlin Barrer added three goals and three assists, while classmate Elizabeth Gula notched four scores and passed for two assists. First-year midfielder Emma Edmondson had another great game with three goals and one assist. Sophomore Dana Rich also contributed two goals in the winning cause. Junior Kira Thorien had six saves in goal.

"We had to iron out a few mistakes today, but after we did that, we played much cleaner and much better the rest of the way," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We're continuously working to improve our game."

The Yeowomen will be off from competition tomorrow, then they will play their final spring break game against host The University of Dallas on March 30 at 4:00 p.m.

March 26, 2007
The Yeowomen continued their impressive spring break trip this afternoon by downing Linfield College, 20-5, to improve to 2-1 on the year. Sophomore attacker Lela Hull, who was named last week's North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her efforts in the Yeowomen's first two games of the 2007 campaign, racked up a game-high six goals today.

Hull, who also dished out a game-high three assists, wasn't alone though in helping Head Coach Deb Ranieri's team light up the scoreboard. Junior Kaitlin Barrer also notched five goals and two assists, while first-year Emma Edmondson accumulated four goals.

The Yeowomen trailed Linfield early in the first half, but put together a strong rally to take a 9-5 lead into the intermission. Oberlin was out-shot by Linfield 32-46, but thanks for stellar play in goal by junior Kira Thorien, the Yeowomen were able to hold onto the lead throughout the entire second half. Thorien boasted 21 saves in 60 minutes of action.

Oberlin's next scheduled spring break game is on Wednesday against Pacific University at 4:00 p.m.

The women's lacrosse team got off to a great start during its spring break trip at the University of Dallas by routing non-conference foe Fontbonne University, 19-2. The Yeomen scored 16 first-half goals en route to notching their first win of the 2007 season.

Sophomore attacked Lela Hull had an outstanding afternoon for Head Coach Deb Ranieri, racking up a game-high five goals to go along with four assists. Junior Kaitlin Barrer also tallied four goals, first-year Emma Edmondson scored three, and junior Beth Gula and first-year Scarlett Prati both racked up two goals. Junior Kira Thorien boasted her first collegiate win in goal, allowing just two goals on 15 shots, while also accumulating seven saves.

Oberlin (1-1) will return to the field tomorrow for a non-conference game against Linfield College at 12:00 p.m.

March 29, 2007
The Oberlin men’s tennis team was defeated today by University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 1-8, in a non-conference match in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  With the defeat, the Yeomen fell to 7-5 on the season, while the Warhawks improved to 16-2 overall.

The Yeomen were led today by junior Chris Pray.  Pray defeated Robin Borg, who was ranked 14th in the Central Region, entering today’s match.  With the victory, Pray improved to 9-3 in singles on the year.

“We played pretty well this week and got better every match,” Head Coach Shoemaker said. “Now we have to mentally prepare for two tough conference matches next week.”

Oberlin now returns home from its spring break portion of its schedule to face The College of Wooster on April 3.  The North Coast Athletic Conference match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Heisman Field House.

March 27, 2007
The Yeomen were defeated today by the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a non-conference match-up in Hilton Head, South Carolina, 0-9.  With the loss, Oberlin fell to 7-4 on the year, while Missouri-St. Louis improved to 5-1 overall.

Oberlin lost each of its singles and doubles matches in the defeat. The Yeomen will return to action tomorrow when they face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.  The match is slated to begin at 8:00 a.m.

March 26, 2007 - Part II
For their second match of the day, the Yeomen faced non-conference foe MIT in Hilton Head, S.C. The Engineers held the Yeomen winless in singles and doubles action en route to a 9-0 win.

'They are a tough team that forced us to play at a higher level of tennis," Head Coach Adam Shoemaker said. "We are getting better every day and are looking forward to the rest of the week."

Oberlin (7-3) will continue its spring break trip tomorrow by facing the University of Missouri-St. Louis at noon.

March 26, 2007 - Part I
The Yeomen began their 2007 spring break campaign with a victory over Whitworth, 5-4, in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  With the win, Oberlin improved to 7-2 on the season and Whitworth fell to 2-9 overall.

Oberlin was led in singles by sophomore Chris Pray, sophomore David Midler, and junior Tom Page.  Pray defeated Whitworth’s Ed Anegon, 6-0, 6-4, Midler defeated Michael Carlson 1-6, 6-0, (10-4), and Page defeated Curran Scott, 6-3, 6-3. In doubles action, the Yeomen took two of the three matches in second and third doubles.  The team of junior Ezra Goldman and Midler won their second doubles match, 8-1, while senior Arthur Zeyda and Page won their third doubles match, 8-4.

“We made the adjustments necessary to win the match,” Head Coach Adam Shoemaker said, “It was very windy and we hadn’t dealt with that yet this year.”

The Yeomen return to action tonight against MIT at 6:00 p.m.

The Oberlin women’s tennis team fell today to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2-7, in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  With the defeat, the Yeowomen fell to 7-5 overall, while the Warhawks improved to 11-7 on the year.  Oberlin fell in two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches in the loss.

The Yeowomen were led by sophomore Jane Hayden, junior Jackie Golden, and sophomore Kelly Sipp.  Hayden defeated Lindsay Coakley in her singles match, 6-2, 2-6, 10-3, while Golden and Sipp defeated Jessie Farrar and Tiffany Dawson in second doubles, 8-4.

This match concludes the spring break portion of the season for Oberlin.  The Yeowomen will return to action against The College of Wooster on April 4.

March 27, 2007
The Yeowomen fell today in Hilton Head, South Carolina to non-conference foe Whitworth College, 3-6.  With the loss, Oberlin fell to 7-4 on the year, while Whitworth improved to 6-7 on the season.  The Yeowomen won two of the three doubles matches, but fell in five of the six singles matches today in the loss. 

Oberlin was led by sophomore Jane Hayden, who defeated Whitworth’s Justine Hays, 6-2, 7-5, in singles competition.  Along with her sister, Olivia, she also won her doubles match, 8-3.  Also in doubles action, senior Bianca Barr and sophomore Elle Anzinger also defeated Withworth’s Linh Aven and Katie Troxell, 8-1.

The Yeowomen will return to action on March 29 when they face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 8:00 a.m.

Oberlin’s women’s tennis fell to Erskine College today in Hilton Head, South Carolina, 0-9.  With the loss, the Yeowomen fell to 7-3 overall.

With sophomore Olivia Hayden’s loss today, she fell to 8-3 in singles action on the year and she and her sister Jane, fell to 7-4 in third doubles this season. Sophomore Kelly Sipp lost her fourth singles match of the year, but still maintains a 7-4 record in singles competition.

The Yeowomen will return to action tomorrow with a match against Whitworth.  The non-conference spring break contest is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Oberlin concluded the three-day Asics Invitational this afternoon at Winthrop University (S.C.). In the javelin throw, senior John Hepp placed ninth with a throw of 137'7", while junior Steele Hearne also placed ninth in the event for the Yeowomen with an effort of 99'1".

In the men's 1,500-meter run, sophomore Ryan King put in a solid time of 4:09, good for sixth place, while senior Barrie Newberger placed fifth in the 1,500 (4:48) for the Yeowomen.

Oberlin will next compete at the Case Western Reserve University Invite on April 7 at 9:00 a.m.

Day two of competition at Winthrop University's Asics Invitational went extremely well for the Yeomen and Yeowomen, who broke three records and put forth a number of very strong performances.

The highlight of the day for the Yeowomen was Maddy Davis-Hayes's school record time of 17:33.98 in the 5,000-meter run. Hayes not only beat the second-place finisher in the event by nearly a minute, but she also became a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships by over six seconds.

Also setting new school records were sophomore Kyle Taljan and junior Kate Cook. Taljan finished in seventh place in the decathlon by garnering an Oberlin all-time best 4,863 points. Cook also established a new record for Oberlin in the hammer throw (103'6").

Said Head Coach Ray Appenheimer, "This is exactly what you want out of spring break — our kids competed great and we're really looking forward to tomorrow's events."

March 29, 2007
The Yeomen and Yeowomen concluded day one of the three day Winthrop University Asics Invitational today. The two events slated for competition this afternoon were the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon.

Competing for the Yeomen in the decathlon was sophomore Kyle Taljan. Taljan is currently in sixth place with 2,502 points after the first day of events. The Yeowomen's Bronwen Davies also sits in eighth place after garnering 1,795 points in the first day of the heptathlon.

Oberlin will compete in the Asics Invitational tomorrow and on Saturday.
