Three Oberlin Student-Athletes Named North Coast Athletic Conference Players of the Week

October 9, 2007 -- This past weekend was extremely successful for Oberlin's fall sports teams as three student-athletes were named Player of the Week by the North Coast Athletic Conference. Senior Chase Palmer (football), Lauren Malinowski (field hockey), and Joanna Johnson (cross country) each received the league's top honor for their efforts in recent competitions.

Palmer, a senior strong safety from Highland, Utah, achieved a rare feat by being named the NCAC's Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. A transfer student from Snow College, Palmer has been nothing short of exceptional in his second season for the Yeomen. He was the hero of last Saturday's win over Denison by intercepting a pass with 47 seconds remaining to thwart a comeback drive by the Big Red. He posted a team-best eight tackles (3.5 for loss) and had two sacks and an interception in the 34-27 road victory.

Lauren Malinowski's week couldn't have gone any better as she posted two 1-0 shutout victories in goal over league foes Ohio Wesleyan and Denison. In the two contests, Malinowski, a senior from Wyncote, Pa., accumulated 13 saves, including 11 and a save on a penalty shot against Denison. Her performances helped the Yeowomen improve to 4-2 in the NCAC. Malinowski also received "honor roll" accolades from Women's Field Hockey.com for her efforts this past week.

Just a first-year, Johanna Johnson has already stood out in 2007 as the Yeowomen's top runner. A native of Chico, Calif., Johnson was the NCAC's top finisher at the All-Ohio Championships by placing fourth out of 142 runners. She covered the 5K course in 19:57, leading the Yeowomen to a fourth of 22 team finish in the Division III race.
