Five Selected for Athletics Hall of Fame

January 8 – The John W. Heisman Club at Oberlin College is pleased to announce the selection of five new candidates for the Athletics Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place over Commencement Weekend on the Oberlin campus.

The five inductees represent more than half a century of athletic success at Oberlin. Howard Helfrich ’48 captained the Yeomen basketball team and earned six total letters in football, basketball, and baseball. Laszlo Babos ’61 starred as a goalkeeper for the lacrosse squad. He lettered four times and was named a Division III All-American in 1961. Mark Walsh ’77 excelled as a goalie in lacrosse, ice hockey, and soccer during his four years at Oberlin. In 1975, he led all divisions of the NCAA in saves while minding the nets on the lacrosse field. Wendy Scranton Baumert ’95 earned six letters while competing in lacrosse, field hockey, and swimming. She earned a place on the All-NCAC first team in lacrosse four straight years and is a member of the conference All-Decade team. Shannon Fox ’97 starred in track and field and cross country, earning 11 letters along the way. She won ten conference championships as a distance runner and is a member of the NCAC All-Decade team.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for May 23 at Philips Gymnasium.
