Oberlin College Names Kiki Jacobs Associate Director of Athletics

July 14, 2006 -- The Oberlin College Department of Athletics and Physical Education is pleased to announce the hiring of Kiki Jacobs as the new associate director of athletics. Jacobs, who will manage the internal operations of the department, including NCAA compliance and financial accounting, begins her duties on August 1.

“Kiki Jacobs emerged from an outstanding pool of applicants,” Delta Lodge Director of Athletics and Physical Education Joe Karlgaard said. “She brings a deep understanding of a quality athletics program embedded within a highly selective liberal arts environment. We are very excited to have such an exceptional person, coach and administrator join our staff.”

An accomplished Division III swimming coach, Jacobs spent the last 15 years at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where she served as the aquatics director for eight years and as the school’s head women’s coach throughout her tenure. As the aquatics director, Jacobs managed all of Washington and Lee’s pool-related activities and oversaw a facility schedule that accommodated up to 20 different university and external groups per year. Jacobs’s duties as the leader of the women’s swim program included season planning, scheduling, recruiting, budget management and assisting with the men’s program. Additionally, Jacobs served as the interim men’s swimming coach during the 2002-2003 season.

Jacobs’s teams at Washington and Lee were well-known for succeeding both in and out of the pool. Her Generals were a consistent force in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, winning 13 straight conference titles. Jacobs coached numerous Division III All-Americans and earned ODAC and Atlantic States Coach of the Year honors nine times during her career at Washington and Lee. Academically, her squads’ performance was nearly unmatched, as they finished 2003 and 2005 with the number-one ranked GPA in the nation (including Divisions I, II and III). Her swim teams also boasted an Academic All-American every year since 1992. A well-respected coach within the ODAC, Jacobs served as the conference’s meet championship director her last four years with the Generals.

Prior to arriving at Washington and Lee, Jacobs completed an Athletic Administration Internship at Lehigh University in 1992. A year earlier, she earned a master of science in physical education and sport management from Western Illinois University while working as a graduate assistant swimming coach.

Before graduating from Dickinson College in 1989 with a bachelor of arts in economics and political science, Jacobs left a lasting impression on the Red Devil record books. An 11-time NCAA Division III All-American, she set seven school records and earned nine Middle Atlantic Conference event championships. After her senior season, Jacobs was a recipient of the prestigious McAndrews Award, given to Dickinson’s female athlete of the year. In 1999, she was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

“I want to thank Joe Karlgaard, the search committee and Oberlin for giving me this wonderful opportunity,” Jacobs said. “I am looking forward to the new challenges athletics administration has in store for me. Washington and Lee University has been a great place for me the last 15 years, but now it is time to start a new chapter of my life. I am eager to work with this young and dynamic staff and am confident that good things lie ahead for Oberlin’s athletics department.”
