With the support and encouragement of President Dye, the Board of Trustees, and Joe Karlgaard, our new Director of Athletics and Physical Education, Oberlin has renewed its commitment to excellence in athletics, and the Heisman Club is determined to do what it can to help.
We realize that, at Oberlin, athletics will always play a complementary role to academics and the arts. At the same time, we know that athletics can have a profound and lasting impact on our students, particularly those who strive for excellence in their sports and balance in their lives.
We also believe that it is important for Oberlin to compete successfully with other colleges in attracting those students who want to continue to play sports at the college level. In high school, the best students often excel at sports as well as other extra curricular activities, and we want the quality of Oberlin’s athletics program to be a strong positive factor in their assessment of Oberlin.
The Heisman Club celebrates the achievements of our student athletes. In the 2004-2005 school year, our field hockey team made it to the national tournament, where they narrowly lost to the eventual national champion. Our men's soccer team distinguished itself by having the highest grade point average of any college soccer team in the country. Oberlin athletes experienced many individual successes as well. We think, however, that Oberlin deserves even more.
Please help support us in this effort. We welcome your ideas as well as your contributions. You can contact me at heisman.club@oberlin.edu.
