Marching Band

Active Since: Fall 1997

OVERVIEW

The Oberlin College Marching Band (OCMB) is a completely student-run organization; we pick our own show themes and music, write our own drill in groups, and elect all officers. Any band member is eligible to run for office, arrange or write music, or share special skills. We have a faculty sponsor, but no non-student is directly involved in the marching band’s day-to-day operations.

HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED...

During the fall of 1997, Alison Gent had a dream. A dream filled with a band, but not just any band... a marching band. She searched for others with a similar vision and found she was not alone. She and the others initiated the most ambitious of undertakings…A GROUP WINTER TERM PROJECT. And thus, the marching band was formed. A small group of individuals worked for the month of January, learning color guard or new instruments, writing drill, and arranging music. The end product: a marching band show to impress all who saw it. The marching band gave their first performance in Finney Chapel where they proudly performed a show to a sort of Latin-spy-Star Trek theme. For the first time in over a decade, Oberlin College had a marching band. The marching band increased its performances by playing and marching at basketball, football, rugby, and ultimate frisbee games.

Oberlin College's Fight Song (Ten Thousand Strong)

Ten thousand strong, we sing a song, Oberlin, to thee;
Oh, worthy art thou of fame!
In lands afar shineth thy star setting bondsmen free;
Belov'd is thy glorious name; Belov'd is thy glorious name!

Obelin College's Alma Mater

Sing of our glorious Alma Mater
Tell of her halls of learning old,
Lift high her gold and crimson banner,
Swell loud the chorus strong and bold.
Oberlin, dear Alma Mater,
Forever more thy praise we'll sing.
Take from our lips our heart's glad homage;
Which now to thee in song we bring.
