PREVENTION OF INJURIES
Injuries can be a major obstacle to achieving your personal physical and athletic goals. Student Health Services can be of assistance to you when you are injured due to participation in your club. We would like to remind all athletes that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and a few tips can prevent injuries from occurring in the first place. Make sure that you are properly equipped to play the sport that you are participating in. Good quality shoes can prevent knee, ankle, and foot problems. Make sure that the innersole has retained it cushioning ability, arch support, and that the tread is not worn down. Appropriate protective equipment is essential. Proper warm-up, stretching, and conditioning is a must in preventing injury. If you develop a persistent pain or an ache that is not getting better your best strategy is to have it checked out by a health care provider. Early care can keep problems minor, rather letting them get to the point where they become major. Make sure that your equipment is up to date and in good working order. Check out the field or floor, on which you are playing to look for potential hazards such as holes, unpadded goal posts, wet conditions, etc.
FIRST AID KITS
Student Health services of Oberlin College will provide each club sport with a first aid kit. These kits will be distributed at the beginning of the club sport season and must be checked out to a team captain or designated person by the club. The kits can be restocked, as needed at Student Health Services. We expect that items in the kit be used for club sport activities and not personal reasons. At the end of the season, the kit is then returned to Student Health Clinic. If the kit is not returned by the end of the academic year a fee of $50.00 may be assessed to the club budget.
FIRST AID TRAINING
Student Health Service and the Division of Residential Life offers, each fall, the American Red Cross Sport Safety Training which provides an overview of injury prevention, basic first aid, and CPR certification. We strongly recommend that each club has at least one member participate of each club and a discounted cost will be offered for others that may wish to participate. Call Student Health Services for more information on cost, location, and times.
INJURY CARE
When a club sport participant is injured, the safety of the player is the top priority. If the injury is severe or appears to be life threatening. Call 911 and the player transported by ambulance to Allen Hospital Emergency Department. These injuries would include head or neck injuries, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, and heavy bleeding or severe pain. When in doubt call 911. The athletic department may be available to assist with an injured player, but in no way are responsible for the care of the injured club sport athlete. Your club should not count on the athletic department for assistance as they may or may not be available.
If the injury is mild to moderate and can wait, the athlete has several options. The student can call Student Health Service at 775-8180 for an appointment. We have a full staff of providers who are fully qualified to provide injury and orthopedic care. X-rays, assessment, and treatment are available. Referrals for physical therapy, orthopedic specialists, and other needed services can be made. Your visits to Student Health are at no cost to you. If an injured player wants to be seen immediately they can choose to be seen at Allen Memorial Urgent Care/ER. Fully qualified ER specialists staff Allen Memorial. Urgent Care/ER visits MAY NOT be covered by your insurance-so be aware that you or your parents may be responsible for paying for those visits. If the player has established with a private local provider, a visit with that provider would also be appropriate.
