Oberlin College has sponsored club sports since the early nineteenth century. Club sports are an integral part of the long-standing tradition of student-developed and student-led clubs shared across the Oberlin College community. The most important principle of club sports is that they are student organizations, derived and sustained through the leadership and interest of the students. Club sports are established to promote and develop the interests and skills of members in a particular sport activity. Due to the diversity of students’ interests and skills, club sports offer many unique opportunities to the student body. The clubs usually belong to leagues or associations, competing in contests or tournaments with other universities or colleges. The Student Finance Committee allocates funding to the existing club sports at the end of spring semester. The athletic department supplements the club sports budget with assistance in travel expenses, equipment, etc.
Mission Statement
Club sports are student-initiated and student-governed activities that offer numerous opportunities for students to become involved in the leadership and administration of their respective clubs. Students supervise the membership and activities of the club. The club members are responsible for the club’s constitution and by-laws; membership requirements; selection of the club’s officers; establishment of the officer’s duties; and the development and administration of the club budget. The effectiveness and success of each club depends on the members’ involvement and participation. The Oberlin College club sports program, in accordance with our longstanding tradition of excellence, values student development; student leadership; safe and accessible environments; the maximization of individual potential; the building of lasting traditions; the creation of strong friendships; and the recognition, celebration, and inclusion of the diversity of the Oberlin College campus.
