The Punch Brothers have helped set the pace for the bluegrass revival of the past decade. Formed in Brooklyn, New York, the band—members Chris Eldridge ’04, guitar; Chris Thile, mandolin; Gabe Witcher, violin; Noam Pikelny, banjo; and Paul Kowert, bass—builds its sound around modern classical structures. Competition is presented by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Cleveland Orchestra and showcases the most promising young musicians from around the world. The competition provides more than $20,000 in prize money and concert engagements with orchestras in Beijing and Shanghai, China.
