Artist Recital Series

Apollo’s Fire

Tuesday, March 10, 2009, 8 p.m.

Tickets: $20, OCID and Seniors 55+: $16, Students: $8
Location: Finney Chapel (directions)

Join Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland baroque orchestra, for a trip back in time to 18th-century Venice. The magical city was home to several composers, all of them competing fiercely for attention. While most primarily knew Vivaldi as a violin composer, Albinoni was most respected for his oboe concertos. Legendary Grammy award-winning oboist Alex Klein ’87 brings to life the fiery oboe concertos of both composers, while Apollo’s Fire players—Oberlin Conservatory faculty members and alumni among them—join in the fray with double and triple concertos by other Italian colleagues and rivals. Klein is Professor of Oboe at the Conservatory.

Vivaldi: Oboe Concerto in D Minor, RV 454

Albinoni: Oboe Concerto in D Minor, Op. 9, No. 2

… and more

“Energy, discipline, style and pizzazz … [Apollo’s Fire is] one of America’s leading Baroque orchestras, capable of competing with Europe’s muchrecorded bands.”

“[Alex Klein is] one of the most brilliant oboists of his generation.”
